Churashima Textiles-the Magic of Color and Pattern (Tokyo)
Aug 10, 2019 - Sep 23, 2019
Separated by a huge stretch of ocean, Okinawa has always had a culture disconnected from the Japanese mainland. For hundreds of years it thrived as the Ryukyu Kingdom, with its own dynasty, and beautiful artisanal goods clearly distinct from what you'll find around the rest of Japan. This exhibition is on the woven and dyed goods pass down among Ryukyu royalty (whose island was once referred to as "Churashima), national treasures and exquisite examples of traditional work. You'll get to learn lots about the beautiful textiles, and see some cool examples of "bashofu" and "jofu" (woven fabric of specific plants).
