GIGA MANGA: From Edo Giga to Modern Manga (Art Exhibition, Tokyo)
Nov 25, 2020 - Jan 24, 2021
Japanese manga, the countries unique form of comic books, is now a worldwide phenomenon. But many historians believe that the beloved medium reaches back to Japan's historic "giga" (戯画) caricatures, playful illustrations that entertained viewers way back in the Edo period (1603-1868). This exhibition at the Hokusai Museum explores the way one art form evolved into another over hundreds of years of Japanese history, displaying famous ukiyo-e block prints and sketches from Katsushika Hokusai on the way.
