The Japanese Cosmetic Industry's First Ever Full-Color Newspaper Ad - A Mini-Exhibit at the Beni Museum (Tokyo)
Jan 05, 2021 - Apr 24, 2021
The Beni Museum is a unique little gallery set up by Isehan Honten, who have been selling "beni" pigment (紅), a traditional Japanese pigment made from safflower, for use in Japanese dyes and makeup since the Edo period (1603-1868). The permanent collection includes traditional beni- making tools and old-fashioned makeup kits, but this additional limited-time "mini-exhibit" allows visitors to see the first-ever full-page full-color advertisement for Japanese cosmetics, originally published in the Mainichi Shinbun in 1952! This historical treasure was created in the days before color film was common, which means the colors were added by hand, including the bright red of beni lipstick.
