John Constable (1776-1837) reinvigorated and reformed the world of English landscape painting in the 19th century alongside fellow artist J.M.W. Turner, bringing new interest and enthusiasm to the field. The painter was unwavering in his ambition to paint the places intimately tied to his own life and his relationships, leaving us with a number of rural landscapes depicting his home county of Suffolk, and images of all that Constable loved and held dear around Salisbury, Hampstead, and Brighton. In addition to a number of oil paintings, watercolors, sketches, and prints on loan from the Tate Collection, the exhibition also features 20 pieces from Constable's contemporaries, for a total of 85 works that show off the fruits of John Constable's single-minded quest to paint a world of fresh, vibrant landscapes.
