如意輪寺(かえる寺)風鈴まつり
Nyoirinji Temple was established all the way back in the year 729, when it was a place of worship for the goddess Kannon, but these days it’s more famous as a “frog temple”! Somewhere around 10,000 frogs of all shapes and sizes can be found scattered throughout the temple grounds, hidden away in the gardens throughout spring cherry blossom season and the fall foliage season. Things look a little different in the summer, however, when the temple holds its annual wind chime festival. Thousands of wind chimes are hung along and above the pathways, and between the moving patterns of dappled shade on the path, the colorful chimes flitting about overhead, and the music of each glass bell as it rings in the breeze, it feels like summer magic. Visitors can listen to the relaxing tinkle of the wind blowing past and write their summer wishes on the papers dangling below!
Most years, the wind chime festival runs from the beginning of April until the end of September, but as a part of a local Fukuoka-Oita travel project, dates have been temporarily changed in 2024.
