Why Visit Cape Manzamo?
Perched on the western coast of the main Okinawan island, not far from Onna Village or Onna-son, Cape Manzamo is a dramatic 20‑meter limestone cliff sculpted by centuries of ocean erosion. Its signature shape juts gracefully into the East China Sea like a towering elephant wading into the salty water, and offering visitors breathtaking panoramic views of the area. Atop the cliff, on the “elephant’s back,” is a broad grassy plateau that was famously once visited by the 18th‑century king Sho Kei, who ruled over the native Ryukyu people of Okinawa. Sho Kei looked out across the vast field, awed by its breadth, and named it along the lines of “The Cliff That Could Seat 10,000 People,” or “Manzamo” (万座毛). While the cliff isn’t usually quite so crowded, it does attract a steady stream of visitors who come to enjoy the landscape and take lots of pictures along the scenic promenades.
How to Get to Cape Manzamo & Other Travel Tips
Many travelers choose to explore Okinawa using a rental car, likely the simplest way to deal with what you might call “island-style infrastructure.” Drivers can follow Route 58 north from Naha or Nago to Onna Village, then turn off to Cape Manzamo, approximately 40 km in total with free parking when you arrive. If you are taking on the adventure of Okinawa by bus, then the 20 or 120 bus from Naha Bus Terminal or Nago Bus Terminal will take you to Onna Son Yakuba-mae bus stop, which is a 15-minute walk from the cape. It takes around an hour and 45 minutes, and costs about 1,500~2,000 yen each way.

The stroller and wheelchair-friendly promenade requires a 100-yen entrance fee, used to maintain the facility and conserve the environment. Inside the visitor center you’ll find conveniences like bathrooms and shops selling snacks.
What to Do at Cape Manzamo
Visit early to beat the crowds and enjoy the peaceful environment and beautiful elephant-shaped natural features – as well as peak photography conditions – before the crowds intensify and make their way into all of your snapshots. If you don’t mind sharing the space with others, however, the west-facing cliffs are said to be most spectacular at sunset!
Since Manzamo is a particularly popular photo backdrop, it’s not uncommon to see wedding photography and other photoshoots on the cliff. To make your photos extra special, you can even rent traditional Okinawan attire (called “Ryuso”) at the visitor’s center! Dress up like King Sho Kei himself, and look out over your domain.
If you’d like to see the famous cliffs from every angle, then you might want to head down to the water! Picking your way across the tidal pools at low tide is a popular way to explore the area, and right below the plateau is a popular snorkeling site known locally as “the Toilet Bowl.”

Aside from Kotohiragu Shrine and Ritsurin Garden, the prefecture's small islands are popular, and Kagawa is full of unique destinations, like Angel Road. They say that if you lay eyes on Zenigata Sunae, a huge Kagawa sand painting, you'll never have money troubles ever again.

Fukuoka Prefecture has the highest population on the southern island of Kyushu, with two major cities: Fukuoka and Kitakyushu. Thanks to growing transportation networks, Fukuoka is more accessible than ever, and so are the many local attractions. On top of historical spots like Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, travelers shouldn't miss Fukuoka's food scene, with motsu nabe (offal hotpot), mentaiko (spicy cod roe), and famous Hakata ramen―best eaten from a food stall in the Nakasu area of Hakata. Plus, it's full of all sorts of destinations for travelers, like trendy shopping centers, and the beautiful nature of Itoshima and Yanagawa.

Kagoshima Prefecture played a major role in Japan's modernization as a backdrop for famous historical figures like samurais Saigo Takamori and Okubo Toshimichi, who pushed Japan out of the Edo era and into the Meiji. Because of that, Sengan-en Garden is just one of many historical destinations, and when it comes to attractions Kagoshima has plenty: the active volcano of Sakurajima, popular hot springs Ibusuki Onsen and Kirishima Onsen, World Heritage Site Yakushima Island, even what Japan calls the "island closest to heaven," Amami Oshima. Kagoshima might be found on the very southernmost tip of the southern island of Kyushu, but there's plenty to see.

OKINAWA

The island chain of Okinawa (沖縄) makes up the southernmost tip of Japan, which is why it's also the most tropical area in the country. Thanks to a history of independence and totally distinct political and cultural events, Okinawa has a unique culture, and remnants of the Ryukyu Kingdom are still visible all over the islands. Food, language, traditional dress, it's all a little different! It's also said to be the birthplace of karate.
