With intense summer heat and unpredictable rains causing many cities across Japan to push their fireworks festivals either earlier or later in the year, many fireworks events in Kanto (the region including Tokyo) are actually set for October in 2025, and the sparkling lights are even more beautiful in the cool, comfortable autumn air! If you’re visiting Japan in October, don’t miss these three fireworks festivals near Tokyo!
Kawaguchi Fireworks Festival (Saitama)

Returning for the first time in over 60 years, the newly revived Kawaguchi Fireworks Festival will be held at the Arakawa Sports Park, located along the banks of the Arakawa River that runs through Saitama and into Tokyo. Both paid seating with chairs and tables, and free lawn areas are available. The carefully-timed fireworks show will last a full hour, with over 11,000 bursts set to a music background. Expect a lively atmosphere with plenty of food stalls to enjoy as well!

Chikusei Fireworks Festival (Ibaraki)

Held at one of Japan’s famous “road station” rest stops, Michi-no-Eki Grand Terrace Chikusei, the Chikusei Fireworks Festival returns this year with three grand guiding principles. First, the event promises to offer Japan’s most comfortable fireworks-viewing experience, all at a roadside station. Next, this festival presents itself as a competition among Ibaraki’s top pyrotechnic artists! And finally, promising speed and intensity, the Chikusei Fireworks Festival features “over 20,000 fireworks in one hour”! Last year’s show featured 20,001 fireworks (or so they claimed), and this year’s edition is even bigger, promising 20,021 bursts, a number chosen in celebration of the 20th anniversary of Chikusei City’s founding. One highlight of the event will be the live taiko drum performance synchronized with the fireworks, a rare choice that we think will turn it into an exhilarating spectacle from start to finish!

Fujisawa Enoshima Fireworks Festival (Kanagawa)

Just about an hour from central Tokyo, this fireworks festival takes place every October in an area known for being a favorite seaside escape for those living in the big city! Held on Nishihama Beach in Katase, the event features around 1,000 fireworks, launched over the course of 30 minutes. Compared to some of the other Japanese fireworks festivals, this isn’t a huge display, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a popular event. The highlight is the festival’s two-foot shells, each of which explodes into a truly breathtaking firework with a diameter of roughly 480 meters. The result is unforgettable, a spectacular display with Enoshima Island as the backdrop.

It's known for being the smallest prefecture in Japan, by area, but at the same time Kagawa is called the "Udon Prefecture" thanks to its famous sanuki udon. Aside from Kotohiragu Shrine and Ritsurin Garden, the prefecture's small islands are popular, and Kagawa is full of unique destinations, like Angel Road. They say that if you lay eyes on Zenigata Sunae, a huge Kagawa sand painting, you'll never have money troubles ever again.

Fukuoka Prefecture has the highest population on the southern island of Kyushu, with two major cities: Fukuoka and Kitakyushu. Thanks to growing transportation networks, Fukuoka is more accessible than ever, and so are the many local attractions. On top of historical spots like Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, travelers shouldn't miss Fukuoka's food scene, with motsu nabe (offal hotpot), mentaiko (spicy cod roe), and famous Hakata ramen―best eaten from a food stall in the Nakasu area of Hakata. Plus, it's full of all sorts of destinations for travelers, like trendy shopping centers, and the beautiful nature of Itoshima and Yanagawa.

Kagoshima Prefecture played a major role in Japan's modernization as a backdrop for famous historical figures like samurais Saigo Takamori and Okubo Toshimichi, who pushed Japan out of the Edo era and into the Meiji. Because of that, Sengan-en Garden is just one of many historical destinations, and when it comes to attractions Kagoshima has plenty: the active volcano of Sakurajima, popular hot springs Ibusuki Onsen and Kirishima Onsen, World Heritage Site Yakushima Island, even what Japan calls the "island closest to heaven," Amami Oshima. Kagoshima might be found on the very southernmost tip of the southern island of Kyushu, but there's plenty to see.
