Maid cafes are a quirky part of Japanese culture, offering a cafe experience that is much more about the maid-costumed staff than the food or drinks, but Meido Cafe Shangri-la is no standard maid cafe. Located in the small town of Kiryu, Gunma Prefecture, all the staff at this unique maid cafe are 65 or older! And now, the cafe is making an effort to branch out and support the wider senior community, by entering the world of matchmaking. Meido Cafe Shangri-la is now hosting dating event for seniors, with the very first one bringing together six single participants in their 60s to 80s or an afternoon aimed at sparking new friendships and possible romance.

Nicknamed the “Second Spring,” this gathering took place not in a cafe but at a local temple hall, leaning into the playful “meido/maid” wordplay in the cafe’s name – meido sounds like “maid,” but it also means “afterlife” in Japanese. Four men and two women relaxed on the tatami mat floors of the temple building, snacking on hors d’oeuvres while the cafe’s manager and five costumed senior maids acted as hosts and matchmakers. Keeping the tone light, the order of introductions was decided by a game resembling a wedding bouquet toss, and a lively round of Jomo Karuta (a beloved Gunma card game) kept all entertained – using oversized cards for readability, of course.

To help conversations flow, the maids drew on their experience at the cafe, prompting guests with easy topics like favorite foods and travel memories. As the participants nibbled on chestnut yokan sweets decorated with hearts, the maids even encouraged everyone to join in on the traditional “moe moe” chant familiar to maid-cafe fans.
The event didn’t involve any formal matchmaking process, but some attendees exchanged contact details afterward. Cafe manager Yuki Yokokura said the goal is to give older residents more chances to socialize and meet new companions for everyday outings, proof that Kiryu’s viral “senior maids” concept is evolving far beyond novelty!
