Shimamura: Japanese Fashion Deals Locals Swear By

If you’re going by what’s popular outside of Japan, many people imagine UNIQLO as the pinnacle of casual Japanese fashion. But if you look at where people really shop within Japan, it’s another story. One of Japan’s most popular chains, one that most foreign visitors miss out on, is Shimamura.
Shimamura began as a small store in Saitama Prefecture, first opening its doors back in 1953 to offer a selection of clothing and daily necessities. Over time, however, the company has expanded into a nationwide fashion chain known for its reasonable prices. Today, there are close to 2,200 stores across all 47 prefectures in Japan, conveniently accessible and comfortably familiar to many Japanese locals.
Why Is Shimamura Is So Popular?
A Wide Variety of Fashion at Affordable Prices in Japan

Shimamura has remained beloved in Japan over the decades because it’s helped maked fashion fun and accessible for just about everyone. Shoppers are drawn in by the reasonable pricing, but we all keep coming back thanks to the truly impressive array of products offered. Shimamura offers apparel, accessories, and even home goods designed for a broad range of ages and styles.

Casual looks, feminine pieces, super Japanese “natural” styles, simple outfits for the office… Shimamura makes it easy to find something that suits your needs, and your sense of style as well. With so many pieces that are stylish and practical for everyday wear, yet still extremely affordable, Shimamura has found its way into wardrobes across Japan.
Shimamura mainly offers clothing from their own main brand, “Fashion Center Shimamura,” which primarily designs for women in their 20s to 60s, but they have a few sub-brands as well. “Avail” does casual fashion aimed at teenagers and young working adults, while “Birthday” produces a range of products for newborns through elementary school students. “Chambre” is a women’s fashion and lifestyle brand, and “Divalo” focuses mainly on shoes and other accessories. One nice thing about shopping at Shimamura is seeing the best of all the different brands in one place.

With a broad, varied lineup, Shimamura caters to the needs of everyone from kids and teenagers to working adults (and retirees), with something for everyone in the family. That means plenty of different styles, but also different categories, with menswear, the kind of formal officewear often required in Japan, baby products, and items catering to older customers. Shimamura also offers a much more extensive size range than most Japanese fashion brands, especially when it comes to trendier styles, including an actual plus-size section. With clothing that caters to different ages, body types, and lifestyles, Shimamura has become a reliable favorite, where Japanese locals know they can go to find good options that fit them perfectly.
New Fashion Finds on the Regular

New stock arrives almost every day at Shimamura locations around Japan, and quantities are always limited, offering fresh discoveries every visit. For any particular design, each Shimamura location usually only stocks one piece for each color, pattern, and size, so shopping can feel a little like a treasure hunt.
The rule of thumb at Shimamura is “if you find something you like, you should take it home with you before somebody else does.” It’s not unusual to come back to the store later only to discover that the item you had your eye on is already sold out, especially with such impressively affordable pricing. And when prices are kept so reasonable, you can put together a whole outfit, or even a whole travel wardrobe, from tops and bottoms to shoes and accessories, without worrying about blowing your budget.
More Than Just Clothes! What to Buy at Shimamura

Although Shimamura is best known for their everyday clothing, the store actually offers a pretty wide selection of non-apparel products as well. Depending on the location, you might find shoes, bags, socks and innerwear, swimsuits, bedding* (including some very cute cushions), and other daily necessities, so if you like to browse, this is a great place to do it.
*Swimsuit and bedding availability varies by store.

Another especially popular category is all the “Character Goods,” because Shimamura stocks some amazing (and amazingly affordable) merch featuring some pretty popular Japanese characters. You’ll find a big selection of items showcasing characters from Sanrio, Pokémon, Doraemon, Chiikawa, and Disney.
Shimamura is big on collabs, and not just cute characters. You’ll also spot regular releases designed together with Japanese influencers and major brands from both inside and outside of Japan. Some collaborations get a fair amount of buzz, like a collection of pillows created together with the luxury Japanese bedding brand “nishikawa” [sic]. If you (or your travel buddies) aren’t all that into fashion, you’ll still find plenty to look at.

Wondering where to find it all? Shimamura, can feel like a big box store, and they do have plenty of locations in suburbs around Japan, but they also have some surprisingly convenient locations. The store the Japankuru team visited (seen throughout all over this page) is actually the Shimamura Asakusa ROX・3G Store, located in Asakusa. Yes, that means it’s right in the heart of one of Tokyo’s biggest sightseeing spots. For a better look inside, and some more examples of what you’ll find there, check out the five outfits we put together during our visit to the Asakusa Shimamura!

Find Your Style! 5 Outfits Made With Japanese Fashion Recommendations at Shimamura
Now that you finally know about this hidden gem in Japan, you might as well see a little of what Shimamura has to offer! We put together five easy outfit ideas perfect for your everyday wardrobe to show you what kind of options you might find at the shop on an average day, from easy-to-style casual looks to going-out fits. Take a page out of the Japanese fashion book, mix and match with your own usual style, and hopefully you’ll find a little fresh inspiration!
Outfit ① Everyday Polka Dots — Stroll the City Streets of Tokyo

Our first Shimamura look is relaxed, something you could use for a casual everyday outing, and the trendy polka dot t-shirt adds just the right touch of kawaii without feeling overly cutesy. Pairing it with a dark-colored denim skirt helps create a clean silhouette, while keeping it easy to move around in. The brown plaid bag gives the outfit a tiny hint of cottagecore, creating the kind of aesthetic you’ll see hanging out in cafes all over Tokyo.
It’s a versatile outfit, cute enough to look great while you explore the city, but comfortable enough to be practical while traveling. Of course, it photographs well, and each individual item can be easily mixed and matched with other pieces, to give you plenty of flexibility.
Outfit ② Sweet Girly Pop — Enjoy Your Japanese Summer Outings

Next, we decided to really lean into Japan’s sweet, feminine, kawaii style, perfect for anyone who likes to feel cute while still staying comfy in the summer sun. The outfit is centered around a lightweight white dress, made from a breezy light material that both looks and feels refreshing—enough to tempt you out onto Japan’s blazing summer streets. Layering an oversized pale pink cardigan over it not only adds a cute, soft touch, but also helps protect against strong UV rays and chilly air conditioning. The final touches bring it all together, with a summery bright blue cap, and a silver bag that adds a playful accent for a trendy finish.
The result is simple but stylish, just the way you want to feel during your summer trip to Japan! Whether you’re wandering Japan’s flower gardens, joining in on a summer festival, or taking a long train to the beach, this cute look will have you outshining the summer sun.
Outfit ③ Street Casual — Look & Feel Carefree During Your Trip

Not quite feeling those feminine styles? Switch to something a little more “cool” in this casual outfit: an oversized t-shirt paired with relaxed-fit denim pants for easygoing, practical comfort. It’s a great choice for the hot summer months when you just want something loose and easy, without sacrificing style. The white t-shirt and jeans combination is clean and classic, effortlessly stylish without looking dressed up. Adding a mesh tote is an easy way to push the look further into the sphere of Japanese street-fashion—even simple items can create a polished, trendy look when you combine and style them right!
This simple outfit is cool, but ultimately approachable, capturing the effortless aesthetics often seen in Japanese fashion.
Outfit ④ Relaxed Chic — Project Simple, Fresh Sophistication

We’ve been focusing on some pretty youthful looks, but Shimamura is popular among a wide range of generations (largely catering to customers in their 20s through their 60s), so there are plenty of more sophisticated pieces as well. If you want your look to reflect a more polished and mature atmosphere, this one’s for you! Pairing a white t-shirt with a long denim skirt gives us a look that’s comfortable and easy, and draping a pale yellow shirt over top adds brightness, for a refreshing summer feel. The addition of a vivid green cap and a light tote bag completes the look just like a local, coming off as elegant but still approachable.
If you tend to reach for more understated pieces, this outfit looks neat and polished while still exuding relaxed vibes, perfect for a day of shopping in Tokyo, or wherever else your Japanese adventures take you!
Outfit ⑤ The Oversized Blazer — Layer Like It’s Summer in Japan

Japanese summers are hot and humid… at least when you’re outdoors. But when you head inside, places like shopping malls, cafes, museums, and other indoor attractions often blast the air conditioning, leaving you surprisingly chilly. Our final look was styled specifically for summer travel in Japan, with easy temperature adjustment in mind! The navy dress keeps things light and summery, but layering an oversized blazer in a neutral beige tone adds a little polish, giving off a more mature impression. Pairing it with a silver bag, vivid orange straps included, lends just the right touch of brightness to the simple outfit.
Light outerwear and blazers like these are staple summer fashion items in Japan, so if you’re interested in Japanese fashion and want to dip your toe in during your trip to Japan, Shimamura is a great place to look for trendy pieces to add to your wardrobe.
In fact, if any of these five outfit recommendations caught your eye, it’s a sign that you should probably check out the selection at Shimamura next time you’re in Asakusa—or near any of their other locations in Japan!
💡 Shimamura Shopping Tips for Your Visit to Asakusa
If you’ve gotten this far, you’re probably already planning a visit to Shimamura next time you’re in Japan. Before you go, we’ve got a few shopping tips to give you the best possible experience at the Shimamura Asakusa ROX・3G Store!
Tax-Free Counter Available in Asakusa

For international visitors, Shimamura Asakusa ROX・3G Store offers in-store tax-free shopping services. If your total purchase is 5,500 yen or more in a single transaction, you can complete the tax exemption procedures right at the register. If you’re planning a big shopping trip, they make it convenient! The store accepts both cash and credit cards, including contactless payments using your phone, to make the process totally smooth and stress-free.
Shop Shimamura Online, Even After Returning Home

If you have a blast shopping at Shimamura and find yourself thinking, “I can’t wait to get back there!” Don’t worry, their online shop now offers overseas shipping! When you’re traveling in Japan, keeping your luggage underweight for your return flight home is a struggle, so you might have to pick and choose from all your favorite finds at Shimamura, even if you really wish you could bring them all home with you. Fortunately, many of those items can also be found online, so you can always place an order for anything you missed once you get home, instead of struggling with an overweight suitcase!
Fitting Rooms Scattered Throughout the Store

It’s no surprise that you can try things on at the fitting rooms at the Shimamura Asakusa ROX・3G Store, but what you might want to know is that there are actually standalone fitting rooms throughout the shop, not just in one place. Once you’re there, Shimamura has similar fitting room rules to many Japanese retailers: you’ll need to remove your shoes before entering the fitting room, and you can try on up to two items at a time.
