A Heartwarming Update From Ichikawa City Zoo
Punch, the Japanese macaque who captured hearts around the world by clinging to a stuffed orangutan, is growing up. The young monkey, born at Ichikawa City Zoo in Chiba Prefecture in July 2025, was hand-raised by zookeepers after being abandoned by his mother. When his plush toy became a source of comfort, the heart-wrenching images made him an unexpected internet favorite.
Learning to Be Part of the Troop

Although Punch rejoined the macaque troop in January 2026, the transition wasn’t easy. Other monkeys sometimes threatened or excluded him, and he rarely let go of his stuffed companion. Now, several months later, zookeepers have noticed a welcome change: Punch is spending much more time playing with other monkeys and is often seen without the toy.
According to zoo official Takashi Yasunaga, the plush animal likely represented security during a stressful period. As Punch gradually builds relationships within the troop, his anxiety appears to be easing, although staff continue to monitor his interactions carefully.
A New “Little Brother”
Punch is no longer the youngest member of the group. In April, a female macaque gave birth to a new baby, making Punch the troop’s second-youngest monkey. Zookeepers hope the growing family will help him continue developing normal social bonds with the other macaques.
Visitors Asked to Keep Quiet
Punch’s popularity has brought large crowds to Ichikawa City Zoo, especially on weekends. Concerned that noise and heavy visitor traffic could increase stress for the monkeys, the zoo recently installed a new barrier that moves visitors about one meter farther from the enclosure.
Staff are also asking guests to remain especially quiet around the monkey mountain to help protect both the newborn macaque and its mother.
A Happy Next Chapter
Punch’s story began with a stuffed animal replacing the comfort of his mother, but his latest milestone is an encouraging one. As he becomes more accepted by the troop and spends less time relying on his plush companion, the young macaque is taking another important step toward life as a normal member of the family.
