A Tokyo Yukata Event for the Summer

Outside of Tokyo’s more traditional neighborhoods, lightweight summer yukata are usually only spotted at big traditional festivals or other special events. But this summer, you don’t need to look for a special celebration just to enjoy the summer breeze in a fun traditional outfit. A number of businesses and organizations in the Nihonbashi area have banded together to encourage visitors to enjoy the neighborhood as a summer destination, putting together a variety of special event areas and promotions under the name ECO EDO. So put on a yukata and head into the maze of Nihonbashi’s tall office buildings! Revel in the contrast between the busy urban atmosphere and your own traditional Japanese summer wear!

Nihonbashi Area Discounts

The event website encourages visitors to stroll through Nihonbashi as if it were one of Tokyo’s more traditional sightseeing areas, and you can make the most of the experience by seeking out special ECO EDO event spots. Walk through tunnels of gently tinkling wind chimes in the Coredo Muromachi Terrace Keyaki Plaza or Fukutoku Shrine to enjoy the sounds of the season. Savor Japan’s summer sweets at the kakigori (shaved ice) festival, found in the Coredo Muromachi Terrace Oyane Plaza in the afternoon from July 17th to 20th. Don’t have a yukata ready to go? No worries, a handful of spots in the area are set up to sell or rent them for the event, and the staff can even help you get dressed so your yukata looks picture-perfect. Look for a designated “Nihonbashi Yukata Station,” and they can help you look the part.
