Japan’s Quirkiest “Museum” Is Now in Yokohama
Japan might be known for impeccably clean bathrooms, but that doesn’t mean the country doesn’t appreciate a little bathroom humor. And for sightseers interested in experiencing one of Japan’s strangest cultural quirks, a brand new attraction has opened in Yokohama this summer.

Japan’s “Unko Museum” facilities are colorful, cutesy spaces full of interactive attractions and brilliant backdrops, designed to attract excitable young children and their bemused parents, as well as young adults looking for fun photo backdrops. And everything in the space is themed around, well, poop. Or at least, a sanitary and oh-so-adorable version of poop, rendered in pastel colors and surrounded by flashing lights. The Unko Museum has opened up branches across Japan, from Tokyo to Okinawa, and the newest location has just opened its doors in Minato Mirai, only a few minutes on foot from other popular Yokohama sightseeing spots like the Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse and the Cupnoodles Museum Yokohama.

Opened on August 1, 2026, the Unko Museum is bringing a brightly colored, proudly silly take on poop to the Yokohama World Porters shopping complex. If you’re ready for a carefree hour of uniquely Japanese entertainment, away from Japan’s humid summer heat and heavy typhoon rains, you might want to check out Yokohama’s newest indoor attraction.

A Pink World Filled with “Unko Love”
The theme of the new Yokohama Unko Museum is “Unko Love,” which, yes, does literally mean “poop love.” Visitors are given every chance to fall in love with this fantastical world of “unko,” as they’re invited to see, touch, photograph, and play with cute, stylized poop-shaped creations while surrounded by vivid pink walls and flashing unko lights. When the Japankuru team visited, we could see how this place would soon welcome waves of families with young kids. During less family-focused hours of the day, however, we think young adults will find plenty to entertain themselves.

The experience begins at the My Unko Maker, where each visitor gets to “produce” a colorful “My Unko” companion to carry around the museum on the end of a wand (and then take home as a souvenir). Inside the main area, Unko Museum fans will find familiar attractions alongside new activities created exclusively for the Yokohama branch, and some other exclusive features. Unlike other locations, the Yokohama “Unko Volcano” has two enormous poop-shaped cones ready to collect “Unko Love” from around the world and erupt in a shower of tiny foam unko. If you’re not overly squeamish, it’s adorable.

Unko Games and Picture-Taking Opportunities

From neon signs to an unko-themed afternoon tea spread, there are some truly… innovative… backdrops available for anyone looking to take a fun snapshot or two in Yokohama. But we were glad to see that there’s a lot of genuinely interactive fun to be had at this “museum,” too.

Visitors can push buttons and pull levers in an unko factory, or run and jump across the floor to play vaguely poop-themed games projected on the walls and underfoot. Hop in the giant toy car, and you can play a solo round of an unko kart racer game!

Nearby, the Kusoge Center (a pun on a real Japanese term for a “crappy game”) has five deliberately absurd games, each one bringing the unko theme to the kind of mechanics you might find in a retro arcade game, or a modern phone game. Some of these games are multiplayer so you can get everyone involved—try Push It Out! Unko Animals to select poop animals and push your companions to their doom.

There are also multiple areas where you can find inspiration in the unko, and share your Unko Love in the form of art.

The final area in the museum is likely to make any experienced Japan traveler laugh, as an obvious reference to a certain Japanese installation art collective—but poop-themed, of course.

Learn to Love Unko in Yokohama
The subject matter is overwhelmingly silly, but the Unko Museum is built around overturning conventional ideas about what belongs in a museum, and the result is an interactive entertainment space filled with games, unko artwork, and ridiculous photo opportunities of all kinds. For those in Yokohama ready to take themselves a little less seriously, Unko Museum Yokohama offers a chance to let go for an hour and love the unko.

PS: You can take home your “My Unko” when you leave, but don’t forget to check out the gift shop for some unhinged unko merch, from actual toilet paper to colorful poop hats, stuffed toys, keychains, and more.
