As a shrine dedicated to scholar god Sugawara no Michizane, Yushima Tenjin is popular with students hoping to get into nearby Tokyo University, but those in the know come specifically to see this shrine’s beautiful plum blossoms each year as winter turns to spring. These early spring blooms have been famous since Japan’s Edo period (1603-1868), and the official Plum Blossom Festival now includes a market featuring local goods from around Japan, dozens of performances spread over the course of the festival, and of course plenty of beautiful plum blossoms to see!
