美男におわす
From paintings of beautiful boys to depictions of handsome young men, this exhibition takes a look at how beautiful men appear within the world of Japan’s visual culture. While the ukiyo-e prints and paintings of beautiful women in Japan’s Edo era (1603-1868) were pulled together under the name “bijinga” (美人画), literally “beautiful woman pictures,” similar works featuring beautiful men were never similarly compiled. But that doesn’t mean that there aren’t plenty of beautiful men to be found in the long history of Japanese art, and this exhibition offers a chance to see a unique selection of great works.
