隅田川花火大会
Japan’s oldest firework festival! Today, the Sumida River Fireworks Festival (隅田川花火大会) features tens of thousands of fireworks each year, and the event in this form goes back over 40 years, but the festival actually reaches back to beginnings in 1733! The modern Sumida River Fireworks Festival is popular with locals and travelers alike, but like most crowded events, was canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19. This year, they’re aiming to get the fireworks festival back on track, trying to push the event from summer to fall and avoid canceling it outright.
