This summer event includes festivities at 3 different shrines, the Tobihata Hachimangu Shrine, Sugawara Shrine, and the Nakabaru Hachimangu Shrine. The main event for viewers is a parade of participants carrying huge 10 meter (33 ft) floats around town, each decked with 12 tiers of bright lanterns. The floats are dubbed “Pyramids of Light” from the 309 lanterns, and they weigh about 2.5 tons, meaning they require about 80 carriers each. Tobata Gion Festival has a history that dates back to 1802, and the procession still includes people wearing traditional happi coats and keeping their steps in time with shouts of “yoitosa! yoitosa!” Part of the event is a competition between the various heavy floats, so don’t miss this impressive display.
