Yunishigawa Onsen, Nikko, Tochigi
Now tucked away inside of Nikko National Park, the Yunishigawa Onsen hot springs area has an 800-year history in connection with some of Japan's most powerful samurai, and the political intrigue that followed. The town was originally formed of refugees from the Heike clan (also known as the Taira), who fled into rural Japan after being defeated by the Minamoto clan (also known as the Genji). These days, far from being a hidden village kept secret from the world, Yunishigawa Onsen attracts history buffs and hot spring lovers alike with historic buildings, traditional festivals, and steaming natural baths.
