The Kanda Festival (Kanda Matsuri/神田祭) is one of Tokyo‘s most iconic traditional events, steeped in centuries of history, and the next edition is scheduled for mid-May 2025! This biannual festival traces its roots back to the Edo period (when Tokyo was still known as Edo) and has long been considered one of the “Three Great Festivals of Edo”. In modern times, it’s also recognized among the “Three Great Festivals of Japan”, cementing its reputation as a must-see cultural event.

While Kanda Shrine may not be on every tourist’s radar, it holds a central place in the hearts of many Shinto worshippers, drawing massive crowds for New Year’s visits and seasonal festivals alike. The Kanda Festival is focused on big, noisy mikoshi processions, where groups of participants parade through Tokyo’s streets carrying elaborately decorated portable shrines. Unlike many smaller festivals, some of the mikoshi at the Kanda Festival are so large they’re nearly the size of a car!

Whether you’re fascinated by Japanese history or simply looking to experience a truly authentic Tokyo festival, the Kanda Festival will an unforgettable celebration in 2025!
