Celebrate the vibrant beauty of early summer in Tokyo at the Bunkyo Hydrangea Festival 2025, an annual event held at Hakusan Shrine in Bunkyo Ward. Since its start in 1985, this beloved local event has welcomed visitors from around Japan and the world to admire over 3,000 flourishing hydrangea bushes in bloom across the shrine’s peaceful gardens.

The highlight of the festival is exclusive access to Hakusan Shrine’s “miniature Mt. Fuji”, a flower-covered hill normally closed to the public. During the festival, guests can climb this tiny “mountain” to enjoy up-close views of the colorful hydrangeas from a unique perspective.

In addition to the breathtaking flowers, the 2025 festival will feature a variety of activities and performances, including Hydrangea Concerts, hydrangea quiz games, and a few festival food stalls offering light snacks. As the gods enshrined in Hakusan Shrine can (according to legend) heal toothaches, it’s also tradition for the Hydrangea Festival to offer days when you can pray for healthy teeth… and even consult real dentists while you’re there!
