This Japanese petting zoo is like an amplified version of the best animal cafes in Tokyo, with friendly animals, ample treats, cute themed food for the humans, and some of Tokyo's most kawaii souvenirs.

AniTouch Tokyo Dome City, a Japanese indoor petting zoo, opened in 2024, and has quickly become a popular relaxation spot in Tokyo. It’s the perfect place for family outings, dates, friend hangouts, or even solo travelers looking to explore the best of Japan! Operated by the Izu Shaboten Zoo (famous for its Capybara Hot Springs), this Tokyo petting zoo is home to some adorable animals, including capybaras who spend their days soaking in clawfoot tubs. There’s even an animal-themed “CAPPY Cafe,” where visitors of all ages can relax surrounded by “kawaii.”

A New Tokyo Animal Destination: Relax & Learn About the World’s Animals in Japan

If you’ve spent any time traveling in Japan, then you’ve probably heard of the country’s many animal cafes, and you might even know about some of Japan’s other unique animal-related facilities, like Izu Shaboten Zoo. Known for its capybaras, who soak in open-air baths, the zoo is particularly popular for its policies that allow visitors to interact with and learn about animals up close, making it a favorite destination for families with kids. In an effort to offer more opportunities to city dwellers of all ages (and travelers with limited time) to connect with animals and nature, and to foster a spirit of animal welfare, Izu Shaboten Zoo has opened a series of AniTouch indoor petting zoos in six locations across Japan, including Odaiba and Tokyo Dome City in Tokyo, as well as Yokohama and Nagoya. These spaces create small animal worlds right in the center of Japan’s most crowded urban landscapes.

The AniTouch in Tokyo Dome City stands out as the newest and largest of these modern Japanese petting zoos, offering an impressive variety of different spaces for animals and entertainment. The indoor footprint spans approximately 1,200m² and houses more than 300 small animals, a total of around 50 different species. Visitors are offered the chance to come face to face with the kinds of animals that normally live far from our everyday lives, and there’s even a dedicated “Nocturnal Animal Area.” Plus, Tokyo Dome City is also home to AniTouch’s first “CAPPY Cafe,” an outdoor cafe counter where you can order food inspired by the capybaras and other cute animals living inside.

This summer, the Japankuru team decided it was high time we find out what AniTouch is all about, leading us to spend an afternoon full of “oohs and ahs” (and plenty of “awws”) at AniTouch Tokyo Dome City. Check out some of the highlights and the details to plan your own visit!

① A Whole Wide World of Small Animals, Coexisting in Japan

AniTouch Tokyo Dome City is home to approximately 50 different species and around 300 individual animals, and while all of the AniTouch residents are collectively categorized as “small animals,” the actual body sizes vary dramatically. What they all share, however, is a generally calm and friendly temperament.

Among the larger animals in the facility are capybaras, long-eared goats, Suffolk sheep, and sloths. Closer to the center of the scale, some of the medium-sized animals include ring-tailed lemurs, meerkats, owls, and micro pigs. There’s a wide variety even within the smallest animals of the bunch, with fluffy little chicks, pointy four-toed hedgehogs, guinea pigs, and even panda mice. Seeing that diverse lineup up close can really expand little ones’ understanding of the animal kingdom – as well as your own!

One highlight is the area called as the “Capybara and Ring-Tailed Lemur Room,” which not only houses capybaras and lemurs, but also a selection of other species, all freely moving around the space together! Animals like so-called “panda goats,” Suffolk sheep, and white-throated toucans live peacefully alongside the capybaras and lemurs. Watching them interact so freely feels a little like spotting animals sharing a habitat in the wild!

The facility also includes a “Bird Paradise,” where cute cockatiels, budgies, parakeets, and other parrots of all shapes and sizes fly freely through the air. Ducks and white cockatoos also share the space, making it a lively space full of flapping wings and noisy squawks.

Over in the Nocturnal Animal Area, AniTouch Tokyo Dome City lets visitors observe nocturnal creatures during their most active hours, from owls to night monkeys, bush babies (galagos), and flying squirrels.

② Capybaras in Clawfoot Bathtubs

Capybaras might have evolved for the wetlands of South America, but they’ve become superstars in Japan, including the adorable capybaras at the Izu Shaboten Zoo – famous for soaking in outdoor hot springs during the winter. At AniTouch Tokyo Dome City, you can see capybaras enjoying a very cosmopolitan Tokyo lifestyle, bathing in cozy clawfoot tubs all year round.

The capybaras currently living at AniTouch Tokyo Dome City are actually one big family that came from the Izu Shaboten Zoo. There’s the dignified father capybara, a caring mother who looks after the young ones, and adorably fluffy little capybara babies scurrying past underfoot.

The capybara habitat is located within the shared space mentioned earlier, where multiple species live together, and the capybaras are allowed to roam freely throughout the area, observing and interacting with visitors as they please. Because capybaras are very gentle and calm by nature, even young kids can enjoy a special moment bonding with these funny animals – as long as they are accompanied by a parent or guardian.

If you’d like to try feeding the capybaras from your own two hands, you can purchase special treats within the facility. (More details below.) One important note: please stay focused while feeding them! If you’re not careful, there is a small chance they may accidentally nibble your hand, and those who’ve tried feeding capybaras before will know – their front teeth are surprisingly strong. So keep an eye on those teeth and any little fingers holding tasty snacks, just to be safe.

③ Small Animals, Rare Encounters, Big Feelings

In a typical zoo, animals are often kept far from visitors, securely on the other side of a fence or thick sheet of glass. At AniTouch, an indoor petting zool, the core mission is to offer a chance to meet animals up close, especially for city dwellers who spend their lives far from the natural world. The goal is to deepen understanding, foster emotional connections, and encourage kindness toward the animals who live around us and those in enivornments far, far away.

To help visitors better understand the animals we share this Earth with, AniTouch offers ample opportunities to observe small animals up close, gently pet them, and even hold some of them (or let them climb on your shoulders!), making for a truly special experience. For those of us whose encounters with wildlife have mainly been through documentaries or animated films, seeing these living, breathing animals right before your eyes, being able to touch them or even try to communicate with them, can bring a profound sense of emotional connection and inner peace.

Of course, while most animals at AniTouch can be touched, not all can be held. To ensure the safety of animals and humans in the facility, only certain animals can be picked up, and some can only be touched with assistance from the staff. On-site signage clearly indicates which animals can be held, and if anything is unclear, you can ask a staff member directly.

One especially memorable highlight was the friendly cockatiels in the “Bird Paradise” area! Every member of the Japankuru team was amazed as these sweet little birds flew over of their own accord to perch on our arms, shoulders, and even our heads! They chirped cheerfully the entire time, as if they were trying to tell us all the hottest gossip from the bird room community. It was truly a delightful experience!

④ Feed the Animals Their Favorite Treats!

Once you’ve gotten used to getting close to the animals and giving them lots of love, one of the most enjoyable features of AniTouch is the many opportunities to feed the animals snacks! Treats are provided for capybaras, long-eared goats, chicks, ducks, guinea pigs, and a variety of other animals, each one specially prepared to keep the animals healthy and happy. One cup or bundle of treats costs 200 yen, but for anyone having too much fun feeding all their new animal friends, there are value packs too! Pay 1,000 yen for 6 servings (1 extra) or 2,000 yen for 13 servings (3 extra).

Note: Please do not feed animals with any outside food or unauthorized items!

⑤ Super-Cute Animal-Themed Souvenirs & Adorable Eats at CAPPY Cafe

The first-ever AniTouch takeout cafe opened alongside AniTouch Tokyo Dome City, providing a full menu of cute animal-themed food items perfect for lunch or a quick snack break! The cafe’s signature item is the “Capi-Burger”, a capybara-themed burger developed in partnership with “R’s”, a famous Chiba burger joint. The result is a dish that’s irresistibly cute, and a savory smell that will quickly tempt you to dig into the flavorful burger. It’s a must-try when visiting CAPPY Cafe.

For those seeking lighter bites or even a sweet treat, some of the other cafe offerings include melon soda floats topped with a capybara-shaped “monaka” wafers, Japanese-style corn dogs with cute red-handed tamarin faces, deep-fried “manju” buns inspired by four-toed hedgehogs, and capybara-shaped “castella” cakes. The capybara cakes, in particular, are a top-selling item thanks to their undeniably kawaii appearance – perfect for everyone thinking “those capybaras are so cute I could just eat them up”!

CAPPY Cafe is a takeout-only cafe counter located outside the AniTouch facility itself. However, the open-air seating areas surrounding the shop makes it more than easy for visitors to enjoy their food on the spot.

No visit would be complete without picking up some of AniTouch’s adorable merchandise to remember the day by! Next to the AniTouch Tokyo Dome City ticket counter is a dedicated souvenir shop filled with unique items, all influenced by Japan’s strong sense of “kawaii.” Many of the items are only available at AniTouch locations, and some are even customizable. Grab one of the tiny clawfoot bathtubs and match it with the many tiny animal keychains to create your own bathing capybara souvenir with all your favorite animals inside! The wacky combination makes these perfect souvenirs, for yourself or a fellow kawaii animal fan back home.

Looking for a souvenir unique to AniTouch Tokyo Dome City? You’ll find original exclusive goods here too, from baseball-themed capybara keychains (inspired by the field at the Tokyo Dome) to original CAPPY Cafe merchandise. The souvenir selection is so delightful that, if you’re anything like the Japankuru team, you’ll struggle to choose just one!

⑥ Unlimited Entry Time

a unique Tokyo workspace, at Japanese indoor petting zoo AniTouch

At AniTouch Tokyo Dome City, you’re generally free to stay as long as you’d like throughout the day*. When you’re ready to take a break, there are rest areas, vending machines, and even a fun themed workspace area where you can get some work done inside, as well as the CAPPY Cafe on the building’s outer wall.

The workspace area features a counter with individual booths, outfitted with wi-fi and outlets, and even a friendly dinosaur to watch over you as you work. If you’ve been meaning to get some work done in Japan, but don’t want to waste a single minute of your trip, this might be the best compromise!

*On certain days, AniTouch may institute a time limit.

Generally, re-entry is not allowed at AniTouch. But if you get hungry during your visit, you can step out to CAPPY Cafe to grab a bite to eat before heading back inside. Just let the staff know that’s where you’re headed on your way out, and be sure to have your receipt ready to show upon re-entry. (At some AniTouch locations, the restrooms are also outside the animal zone, so make sure to let the staff know in those cases too – or else you might not be allowed back in!)

Bonus! Heartwarming Moments at AniTouch Tokyo Dome City

cute animals in Tokyo, at Japanese indoor petting zoo AniTouch

During our visit to AniTouch Tokyo Dome City, we not only enjoyed the chance to interact with a whole zoo of adorable animals, but we also witnessed some very sweet moments between the different animals, and the staff too. For instance, you’ll notice something unexpected going on in the picture above. As we were photographing a meerkat reaching toward the feeding port, a panda goat wandered over and stood nearby, calmly pausing next to the enclosure. Looking closer, we noticed the meerkat was gently scratching the goat’s ear, and the goat looked utterly content, eyes half-closed in bliss.

Another panda goat resident at AniTouch Tokyo Dome City has a habit that seems to leave staff both exasperated and totally charmed: whenever one of the keepers crouches down, the goat nestles its head into their chest. Apparently this goat was particularly fond of being held when it was little, so even now when it’s all grown up and much too big to carry, the goat seems to think it’s small – seeking love and cuddles from all its favorite people. As for those friendly cockatiels we met in Bird Paradise, we asked the staff if they were specially trained. They explained that since these birds have been raised by staff from a young age, growing comfortable with a variety of people while accepting treats, they’ve naturally become comfortable around visitors too.

These may seem like small, fleeting moments, but each adorable scene left us with warm feelings, pondering the bond between humans, animals, and the natural world.

We’ve been focusing on AniTouch’s Tokyo Dome City location because it’s the largest AniTouch facility with the largest variety of animals and attractions, but there are actually a few other AniTouch locations around Japan. Travelers exploring the Tokyo area will also find AniTouch inside malls in Odaiba (Tokyo) and Minatomirai (Yokohama). If your travel plans already include shopping or sightseeing in these neighborhoods, we recommend adding one of these AniTouch locations to your itinerary, so you can enjoy the best of Japan’s cute animals without the need to rework your schedule!

Important Notes Before Visiting

cute animals in Tokyo, at Japanese indoor petting zoo AniTouch

Interacting closely with animals can be a very special experience, and relaxing too, but it’s important to remember that these are living creatures. If startled or overstimulated, they may bite or scratch. Please follow the facility’s rules and treat the animals gently. Careless behavior may result in injury to both animals and humans.

Children in elementary school or younger must be accompanied by a guardian aged 18 or older to ensure the safety of the child and the animals within the facility. (Guardians must also purchase an admission ticket.) In case of accidents, staff will provide access to first aid, but they cannot administer medical treatment.

Animals may also soil or damage clothing or belongings. The goats, in particular, love to nibble on clothes! As much as you may want to look nice for pictures with the animals, we recommend wearing clothing that can hold up to a little bit of dirt or damage. Extra belongings can be stored on the provided shelves or in the lockers for peace of mind.

For detailed facility guidelines, you can check the official website (English available) before visiting.

A Unique Japanese Animal Experience in the Heart of Tokyo

cute animals in Tokyo, at Japanese indoor petting zoo AniTouch

These days, when most of us live busy lives in bustling cities or sculpted suburbs, it’s rare to share space with animals (let alone interact with them directly) unless you surround yourself with a menagerie of pets. This distance has caused so many of us to forget the deep bond between humans and the rest of the animal kingdom, despite sharing this Earth since time immemorial. AniTouch offers city dwellers a chance to rediscover the joy of spending time with other species, and through encounters with animals big and small, a chance to gain new insights into the diversity of life and nature. When you’re ready to go beyond the Japanese animal cafe experience, visit AniTouch in Tokyo!

    • Niki, in south-west Hokkaido, is about 30 minutes from Otaru. The small town is rich with natural resources, fresh water, and clean air, making it a thriving center for fruit farms. Cherries, tomatoes, and grapes are all cultivated in the area, and thanks to a growing local wine industry, it's quickly becoming a food and wine hotspot. Together with the neighboring town of Yoichi, it's a noted area for wine tourism.

    • Niseko is about two hours from New Chitose Airport, in the western part of Hokkaido. It's one of Japan's most noted winter resort areas, and a frequent destination for international visitors. That's all because of the super high-quality powder snow, which wins the hearts of beginners and experts alike, bringing them back for repeat visits. That's not all, though, it's also a great place to enjoy Hokkaido's culinary scene and some beautiful onsen (hot springs).

    • Otaru is in western Hokkaido, about 30 minutes from Sapporo Station. The city thrived around its busy harbor in the 19th and 20th centuries thanks to active trade and fishing, and the buildings remaining from that period are still popular attractions, centered around Otaru Canal. With its history as a center of fishing, it's no surprise that the area's fresh sushi is a must-try. Otaru has over 100 sushi shops, quite a few of which are lined up on Sushiya Dori (Sushi Street).

Mysterious little spots like the Oyu Stone Circle Site and Ryu no Atama (Dragon's Head) are also worth a visit!

International skiiers are especially fond of Zao Onsen Ski Resort and Gassan Ski Resort, and in recent years visitors have been drawn to the area to see the mystical sight of local frost-covered trees. Some destinations are popular regardless of the season, like Risshakuji Temple, AKA Yamadera, Ginzan Onsen's nostalgic old-fashioned streets, and Zao's Okama Lake, all great for taking pictures. Yamagata is also the place to try Yonezawa beef, one of the top 3 varieties of wagyu beef.

    • Nagano Prefecture's popularity starts with a wealth of historic treasures, like Matsumoto Castle, Zenkoji Temple, and Togakushi Shrine, but the highlight might just be the prefecture's natural vistas surrounded by the "Japanese Alps." Nagano's fruit is famous, and there are plenty of places to pick it fresh, and the area is full of hot springs, including Jigokudani Monkey Park―where monkeys take baths as well! Thanks to the construction of the Hokuriku shinkansen line, Nagano is easily reachable from the Tokyo area, adding it to plenty of travel itineraries. To make the most of each season, travelers head to Nara Park, where the Nara deer who wander freely, or climb Mount Yoshino, a famous cherry blossom spot.

Aside from Kotohiragu Shrine and Ritsurin Garden, the prefecture's small islands are popular, and Kagawa is full of unique destinations, like Angel Road. They say that if you lay eyes on Zenigata Sunae, a huge Kagawa sand painting, you'll never have money troubles ever again.
