Dive Into Traditional Tokyo Culture at This Summer Celebration

Looking for uniquely seasonal experiences in Tokyo this summer? Then Sumida Aquarium has something delightful in store for you from July 24th to September 30th. The aquarium’s special summer event for 2025 is titled “Tokyo Goldfish: Little Muses Swimming Through Time” (東京金魚~時代を泳ぐ、小さなミューズたち~), and it’s a lighthearted and artistic tribute to goldfish – one of Japan’s most nostalgic summer icons.
Learn About Tokyo’s Goldfish Traditions

The summer event is spread throughout the aquarium, but as a first stop, we recommend checking out the gallery-style exhibition on the second floor. The displays guide visitors through the cultural history of goldfish in Japan, from when the colorful fish first arrived from China, to the wild variety of fish now found in Tokyo. The exhibit uses Edo-period ukiyo-e prints, humorous sketches, historic documents, and replicas to display how goldfish have really been kept, displayed, and traded throughout the years, helping visitors young and old to understand how goldfish evolved from a luxury pet for the elite to a beloved symbol of summer for the masses.
Immerse Yourself in a Japanese Goldfish Wonderland

The most ostentatious section is the goldfish-focused “Edo-rium” zone, which not only features over 15 varieties of Japan’s most artfully bred goldfish – like Ryukin, Ranchu, and Wakin, but also traditional goldfish lanterns modeled after the ones used in festivals around Japan.

Panels designed by the aquarium’s own care staff also offer visitors insights into each breed’s distinctive features, plus tips on how to take the perfect snapshot and capture the fish at their most photogenic!
Goldfish-Themed Food & Fun

One of the reasons why Sumida Aquarium is so popular with adults is its cafe-like atmosphere, with comfortable seats scattered throughout the first floor, perfect for grabbing a cup of coffee and relaxing with the penguins. So visitors won’t want to miss the limited-time event menu at the aquarium’s Penguin Cafe, which includes treats like a Goldfish Fireworks Soda, Tokyo Goldfish Sundae, and taiyaki-inspired “Kingyoyaki” – which are chilled and filled with fruity strawberry or mango filling for a refreshing summer treat!

Hands-on workshops are part of the experience too, especially popular among families with children. The “Goldfish Research” worksheets offer an educational scavenger hunt designed to help kids observe the goldfish a little more closely, and the free torn-paper mosaic goldfish workshop is a fun and crafty way to engage with the fish – and budding artists can even submit their work for display in the “Goldfish Color Collage Exhibition” if they so choose!
If you’re looking for a memento to take home in place of a mosaic goldfish work, the gift shop is also selling a selection of exclusive event merchandise, like goldfish-themed embroidered keychains and decorative kelp tea that makes it look like goldfish are swimming in your cup.
Relax After a Trip to Tokyo Skytree

Located inside Tokyo Skytree Town, at the base of Tokyo Skytree, Sumida Aquarium offers a refreshing outing that is both family-friendly and great for cafe-loving adults – and this event is a unique chance to appreciate the tiny, colorful muses of the Japanese summer: goldfish!
