2026 Hidden Buddha Reveal at the “Floating” Temple of Kasamori-Kannon | Tokyo Area, Chiba
Don’t Miss This One-in-a-Lifetime Japanese Cultural Event Near Tokyo
Just twice every twelve years, a short trip outside of Tokyo, travelers from near and far arrive at a mysterious temple that seems to float in the air of the lush forests of Chiba Prefecture. The temple is called Kasamori-Kannon (sometimes “Kasamori-ji”), and the crowds are gathering at this sacred site with over 1,200 years of history for a special event known as “Gokaicho” (御開帳), or the Reveal of the Hidden Buddha.

Luckily for travelers visiting Japan in 2026, this year marks the event’s first occurrence in seven years, offering a rare and precious opportunity to encounter a sacred statue at Kasamori-Kannon Temple, normally kept completely hidden from view.
Kasamori-Kannon: A “Shiho Kakezukuri” Architectural Wonder, Japan’s Only “Floating” Forest Temple
This unusual event is held within a rare architectural treasure, Kasamori-Kannon Temple, which was founded in the year 784 by the influential Buddhist monk Saicho (Dengyo Daishi). Rather than cutting into the sacred rock believed to house the Buddha, the temple hall was built to preserve the natural terrain of the Kasamori-dera Natural Forest, now a designated national natural monument. Resting atop a precipice jutting up from the mountainside, the unique structure is actually supported by 61 long, spindly pillars, using a method called “kakezukuri.” Kasamori-Kannon is thought to be the only example in Japan where 4-sided “shiho kakezukuri” is used for steep drops on all sides! Visitors can climb the stairs to the upper platforms to walk among the treetops and admire the boundless views.

The 2026 Gokaicho Event: Experience a Sacred Encounter With the Buddha in Japan
As a precious relic, Kasamori-Kannon Temple’s principal Buddhist image is normally kept hidden behind closed doors, but twice every twelve years, the temple unveils the deity for this special event, the Gokaicho. The “hidden Buddha” in question is actually the Eleven-Faced Kannon, a goddess of mercy, and this revered statue is said to have been carved from camphor wood by the monk Saicho himself. The temple has been carefully protecting it for over 1,200 years!

Kannon is believed to grant happiness in this world, so during the Gokaicho, visitors are welcomed to join in and offer prayers for peace, health, and harmony. The occasion is also celebrated with a host of cultural festivities and traditional ceremonies, making it a unique opportunity to witness Japan’s living cultural traditions up close, including vibrant processions featuring monks and children dressed in ceremonial attire.
Other Kasamori-Kannon Temple Highlights

Check out some of the other unique spots on the temple grounds during your visit! The Camphor Tree of Fertility has an enormous trunk and a natural hollow at its base, and those who pass through it are said to be blessed with plentiful offspring. If you collect goshuin, Kasamori-Kannon Temple is also a great place to bring your goshuincho and receive a beautifully hand-written calligraphic temple seal prepared by the monks. Plan your visit to coincide with the autumn “koyo” season in November, and the trees around the temple will turn to vivid reds and yellows, creating a breathtaking, quintessentially Japanese view of historic wooden architecture framed by autumn foliage.
Of course, Chiba’s “floating” forest temple is quite the sight no matter when you visit, making it a great option for any off-the-beaten-path travel plans around Tokyo!
