An Indoor Tokyo Summer Fireworks Event!?
Goldfish, Penguins, & Starlight Together at Sumida Aquarium

Japan’s summer fireworks festivals are notoriously hot and humid, but this summer, Sumida Aquarium is offering a cool escape with special (indoor) summer celebrations in Tokyo! Sumisui Fireworks 2026: A Cool Summer of Water and Light” (すみすい花火 2026 ~水と光で涼む夏。~) is an event that lets you enjoy Edo-period (1603-1868) summer favorites like fireworks, wind chimes, and glowing lanterns together with the aquarium’s year-round animal residents—even including nights with extended evening hours!

Highlights: Aquarium Animal Fireworks & Dreamy Jellyfish Wind Chimes

The main attraction can be seen unfolding above the aquarium’s open penguin pool, with projection mapping showing colorful goldfish swimming out of the Edo-themed aquariums and across the ceiling during the day, and a glowing night sky filled with marine constellations in the evening. Search the “sky” for the aquarium’s beloved spotted garden eels, jellyfish, penguins, goldfish, sharks, sea turtles, and fur seals—each creature moving across the ceiling just like the real deal, before bursting into brilliant digital fireworks. (With the penguins hanging out below, it feels like watching a summer fireworks display together with some very cool new friends.)

Another highlight awaits on the staircase between the aquarium’s sixth and fifth floors, where a hundred jellyfish-inspired wind chimes hang from the ceiling—the translucent glass shapes and gentle movement creating the impression of floating beneath a shimmering underwater swarm. It’s a gorgeous place to take pictures, and if you really love the wind chimes, you’ll find a limited number of these handmade ones in the gift shop.

A Sumida Aquarium Classic: Goldfish and Traditional Edo Summer Culture

Goldfish have long been a symbol of summer in Edo (present-day Tokyo), and every summer the Sumida Aquarium highlights this cultural connection with seasonal displays, highlighting their “Edorium” goldfish area. In the tanks, wakin, ryukin, ranchu, and other unique varieties of goldfish swim through the water, and above, goldfish lanterns cast a warm glow.

A Taste of Summer at the Penguin Cafe

One of our favorite aspects of the Sumida Aquarium is actually their cafe, which offers seating with a great view of the penguins and their enormous Ogasawara Tank, as well as a fun menu of themed food and drinks. For their summer fireworks event, there are a couple special event items on the menu as well: try the Spicy Salsa Dog (780 yen) (in an adorable penguin-shaped paper dish) when you’re craving a savory bite to eat with a little extra kick, and wash it down with the Sparkling Jellyfish Soda Float (880 yen), a refreshing blue drink topped with a jellyfish marshmallow! They’re the perfect treats to savor as you enjoy the vibrant displays in this cool indoor oasis.
