Celebrate a Unique Tokyo Event This Autumn: Spotted Garden Eel Day 2026 at Sumida Aquarium!
Looking for something fun to do in Tokyo this fall? Sumida Aquarium is celebrating Japan’s annual Spotted Garden Eel Day with a playful new event designed to clear up a surprisingly common misunderstanding. From October 1st to November 16th, the “*Not a Garden Eel Exhibition” is designed to introduce visitors to three similar—but distinct—garden eel species. It turns out, true spotted garden eels, splendid garden eels, and white-spotted garden eels are all unique. Stop by the aquarium to learn how to tell these popular residents apart!
Quizzes, Stamp Rallies, and Special Events (Garden Eel Feeding!?)
The main interactive quiz gallery invites visitors to test their garden eel knowledge, find out how much they really know about the different species, and pose for photos surrounded by garden eel displays. Visitors can also join the quiz-style stamp rally to explore the aquarium in search of special observation points, with plenty of facts about garden eel behavior along the way, and life-size silhouette decorations in the aquarium’s coral reef area to make it easier to compare all three species inside the tank. Special feeding sessions with commentary and true-or-false quizzes are also being held on weekends, holidays, and select dates in November—a unique chance to see these cute little guys in action.
Limited-Edition Garden Eel Food, Activities, and Souvenirs
The festivities continue with a mask-making workshop where visitors can choose one of the three species, study its patterns, and color their own garden eel mask. At the Penguin Cafe, limited-edition menu items include a white-spotted garden eel cheese dog, orange-and-white splendid garden eel soft serve, and a cookies-and-cream spotted garden eel shake. Finally, don’t miss the special merchandise at the gift shop! There’s an enormous 111-centimeter splendid garden eel plush toy for sale, and a pretty cute garden eel coin bank! This is your chance to pick up some pretty unique Tokyo souvenirs—and travel memories to last a lifetime.

Kagoshima Prefecture played a major role in Japan's modernization as a backdrop for famous historical figures like samurais Saigo Takamori and Okubo Toshimichi, who pushed Japan out of the Edo era and into the Meiji. Because of that, Sengan-en Garden is just one of many historical destinations, and when it comes to attractions Kagoshima has plenty: the active volcano of Sakurajima, popular hot springs Ibusuki Onsen and Kirishima Onsen, World Heritage Site Yakushima Island, even what Japan calls the "island closest to heaven," Amami Oshima. The island chain of Okinawa (沖縄) makes up the southernmost tip of Japan, which is why it's also the most tropical area in the country. Thanks to a history of independence and totally distinct political and cultural events, Okinawa has a unique culture, and remnants of the Ryukyu Kingdom are still visible all over the islands. Food, language, traditional dress, it's all a little different! It's also said to be the birthplace of karate.
