This hair comb festival is exactly that: an event dedicated to showing gratitude to the combs and hair ornaments we use to decorate our hair. Old combs are ritually disposed of, a “black hair dance” will be performed as an offering to the deities, and to cap it all off a procession of women will proceed through the grounds, each one showing off the fashions of different historic periods in Japan. Of course, the focus is on each era’s hair arrangements, from 1,300 years ago until today!
This festival is happening at a shrine in Kyoto’s Higashiyama neighborhood. We recently wrote an itinerary for touring Higashiyama, and this festival might fit neatly into that schedule!
