Known for their classic consoles and beloved franchises, the Japanese video game company Sega has announced an unexpected new project for the coming years: a long-term collaboration with the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Focusing on the iconic characters from Sonic the Hedgehog games, the merchandising collab will reimagine the whole Sonic gang to create brand-new imagery inspired by the Olympic rings. The project is a full-throttle collab combining the Olympic spirit with Sonic’s trademark speed – really a match made in heaven for this character who’s gotta go fast.

Sega unveiled new visuals while announcing the special collaboration, showing Sonic the Hedgehog, Shadow, Knuckles, Tails, and Amy sprinting at full speed as if shooting out of the Olympic rings, which are meant to symbolize teamwork, friendship, and the unifying power of sportsmanship. The imagery not only radiates Sonic’s boundless energy but also conveys the enthusiasm and love of new challenges embodied by the Olympic Games themselves.
This new collaboration is part of the global licensing strategy proposed under the “Olympic Agenda 2020+5,” which aims to expand the Olympic brand to encompass a diverse range of official products. The strategy, as they say, allows fans to experience the magic of the Olympics before, during, and after the Games. The IOC’s current licensing initiatives also include a number of different product collections covering a wide variety of merchandise such as apparel, toys, games, accessories, and souvenirs, but clearly there are more interesting IP collabs to come! A complete product lineup is scheduled for release in 2026, including this surprising crossover between video games and the Olympics. It’s time for Sonic to dash full speed onto the Olympic stage!
