In a city renowned for its centuries-old temples and traditional arts, a new kind of cultural landmark is set to emerge in autumn 2025. The internationally acclaimed art collective TeamLab has announced the opening of their newest permanent installation, TeamLab Biovortex Kyoto, as a part of the Kyoto Station urban revitalization Southeast Area Project.
TeamLab is famous for creating visual spectacles, multi-sensory experiences, and highly Instagrammable exhibitions, and the new Kyoto TeamLab museum promises to blur the boundaries between the physical and the perceptual through state-of-the-art interactive installations. With a selection of fresh, never-before-seen works making their debut in Japan, TeamLab Biovortex Kyoto is set to become a new Kyoto destination, drawing the many visitors who come seeking art and entertainment in the city.
What to Expect at TeamLab Biovortex Kyoto: New Art Installations
Unlike TeamLab Planets and TeamLab Borderless (the two Tokyo museums), which offer seasonal themes and occasional additions to their exhibit spaces, TeamLab Biovortex Kyoto is planning to showcase a rotating selection of immersive works. What brings the museum together is a thematic interest in challenging the conventions of physical space and sensory perception, making it a place where “visitors immerse their body in artworks that transcend conventional notions of material substances” – visible in the selection of opening installations that have already been announced. We already know that TeamLab will offer us a feast for the eyes, and plenty of fantastic photo opportunities throughout the new space, so let’s take a look at the conceptual ideas behind a few of the new works.
Massless Amorphous Sculpture

An immense floating sculpture composed of tiny soap bubbles and ambient energy, this work hovers mid-air, “created by the order of energy generated by the phenomena of a unique environment,” as TeamLab puts it. The installation responds organically to human interaction, and while people can immerse themselves in the cloudy structure, it remains impossible to move or push – it can only disperse.
Massless Suns and Dark Suns

This hypnotic space explores the limits of human perception with spheres of light and shadow that don’t exist as physical objects. This “Cognitive Sculpture” can’t even be entirely captured fully on camera, and yet if you try to touch the spheres, they react – not through physical touch, but through the sensory interplay of body, light, and perception – bringing the very notion of existence into question.
Morphing Continuum

Enter this otherworldly space to become a part of the “biocosmos,” a single existence formed from a flowing, ever-shifting mass of glowing spheres floating together to create an airborne work of art. This piece emphasizes the fluidity of time, space, and form – despite its ambiguous boundaries, the sculptural form persists, even as individual components shift and change.
Trails of Life

This interactive piece relies entirely on the presence of visitors to come alive! As people walk through the space, their footsteps generate luminous trails that linger and converge. The artwork exists only through human engagement, creating a dynamic visual record of all the visitors who have come together to share the space.
