Fruit picking is a beloved seasonal activity in Japan, with farms offering all-you-can-eat access to everything from strawberries (the classic) to figs each year. One of the rarer options, however, can be found in Japan’s northern reaches. Visit Ohashi Cherry Farm, and you can go wild among the cherry trees, stuffing yourself until you look as round and rosy as a cherry yourself.
Ohashi Cherry Farms has been around for over 50 years, and this family-owned farm is a warm and welcoming place to try out the experience of fruit-picking in Japan, run by the smiley second-generation owner Masakazu Ohashi. As part of the “National Fruit Contest,” Ohashi Cherry Farm has even won the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing Award!
Pick From 1,500 Trees & Try 50 Varieties of Cherry!
With hundreds of trees and dozens of kinds of cherry, the farm is a cherry-lover’s paradise! If you want the best selection, harvest season is from mid-June to late August. Although this includes the tail-end of Japan’s rainy season, you don’t need to worry about the weather! Ohashi Cherry Farms actually has the largest indoor orchard in Japan (11 acres) and an all-weather dome, so nothing will get in the way of your cherry-picking bonanza. There are even shuttle buses to travel between orchards.
Four Special Gems
Japanese fruit picking farms often rely on an all-you-can-eat while you’re there kind of system, but for an additional fee, you can take home some of the cherries you picked! Since there are so many different kinds of cherries, the price depends on the variety. Options even include four special cherries that aren’t usually sold in stores! The Sato Nishi is less sweet than American cherries, but has a tart flavor that lends it popularity. The Nanyo is a little bigger than the Sato Nishi, with bigger flavor too – they’re said to be the most popular in the orchard. The Gassan Nishiki is a lovely golden yellow, with plump flesh, and an especially high sugar content. Finally, the Summit is a luscious burgundy color, and grows to an impressive size that makes it Japan’s largest cherry!
Bring Home Japanese Cherry Souvenirs

Fukuoka Prefecture has the highest population on the southern island of Kyushu, with two major cities: Fukuoka and Kitakyushu. Thanks to growing transportation networks, Fukuoka is more accessible than ever, and so are the many local attractions. On top of historical spots like Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, travelers shouldn't miss Fukuoka's food scene, with motsu nabe (offal hotpot), mentaiko (spicy cod roe), and famous Hakata ramen―best eaten from a food stall in the Nakasu area of Hakata. Plus, it's full of all sorts of destinations for travelers, like trendy shopping centers, and the beautiful nature of Itoshima and Yanagawa.

Kagoshima Prefecture played a major role in Japan's modernization as a backdrop for famous historical figures like samurais Saigo Takamori and Okubo Toshimichi, who pushed Japan out of the Edo era and into the Meiji. Because of that, Sengan-en Garden is just one of many historical destinations, and when it comes to attractions Kagoshima has plenty: the active volcano of Sakurajima, popular hot springs Ibusuki Onsen and Kirishima Onsen, World Heritage Site Yakushima Island, even what Japan calls the "island closest to heaven," Amami Oshima. Kagoshima might be found on the very southernmost tip of the southern island of Kyushu, but there's plenty to see.

The island chain of Okinawa (沖縄) makes up the southernmost tip of Japan, which is why it's also the most tropical area in the country. Thanks to a history of independence and totally distinct political and cultural events, Okinawa has a unique culture, and remnants of the Ryukyu Kingdom are still visible all over the islands. Food, language, traditional dress, it's all a little different! It's also said to be the birthplace of karate.
