Anime and manga fans who know the name of artist Hirohiko Araki are probably familiar with the dynamic elegance of his art in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, and now the artist is the creative force behind the special exhibition titled Explore Yebisu With Bijin-ga at the Yebisu Brewery Tokyo, part of the 135th anniversary celebration of Tokyo’s own Yebisu Beer.
Over the decades, Yebisu Beer’s history of iconic advertisements has often centered on “bijin-ga,” paintings of beautiful women, and this unique exhibition looks at both historic examples and modern additions. Contributions from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure artist Hirohiko Araki include 3-meter-tall modern “bijin-ga,” reimagined using his own signature bold, illustrative style.
To commemorate the collaboration, specially designed limited-edition Yebisu Beer cans featuring exclusive illustrations from Araki are also available in 300ml and 500ml sizes.
This special event is also your chance to taste “Uketsugumono” (受け継ぐ者, literally “The Inheritor“), a craft beer inspired by Araki’s storytelling legacy and named by the artist himself. Hirohiko Araki’s art comes back to the theme of transmission time and time again – not just via bloodlines, but also will and passion – and this deeply symbolic Yebisu brew pays tribute to the enduring power of narrative and creativity.
