A Refreshing Tokyo Event for June 2026 🌊 Across the Ocean in Ogasawara

Looking for unique things to do in Tokyo in summer 2026? Ready to cool off near Tokyo Skytree? The “Sumida Bonin Island 2026” event at Sumida Aquarium is a refreshing hidden gem during Tokyo’s hot summer, inspired by Japan’s remote Ogasawara Islands!

The Ogasawa or Bonin Islands, Tokyo’s own subtropical paradise, can be found 1,000 kilometers south of the capital, and this year the islands are celebrating 15 years as a UNESCO World Heritage Site! A real visit to Ogasawara might take days, but this special event is bringing a little of the island’s famous crystal-clear seas, rare wildlife, and untouched natural beauty to the big city, so even the busiest travelers can catch a glimpse.

The Perfect Tokyo Aquarium Event for Budding Marine Biologists

Since the facility’s opening in 2012, one of the highlights of Sumida Aquarium has always been the Large Ogasawara Tank, which recreates the vibrant waters surrounding the islands to serve as a permanent home for a wide variety of Ogasawara species.

For this special event, visitors can explore the Sumida Aquarium’s relaxed interior to discover additional exhibits concentrated on the ecosystems of the Ogasawara Islands—including how they might differ from what you see in the aquarium. Go on a “Sumida Bonin Island Walk” to look for special displays on rare animals, corners dedicated to island biodiversity, and even a look at how the local people on the islands live, surrounded by this unique world heritage site. Or bring the kids to a family-friendly workshop to make colorful animal-themed “leis” together, a little like the ones given as precious gifts to locals who leave the Ogasawara Islands.

A Unique Sumida Experience: From Island Life to Snacks & Souvenirs

Visitors can also expect a selection of snacks and souvenirs available exclusively during the event period—each item inspired by the “Bonin Islands,” from the wildlife to the local ocean culture. The enormous (verging on life-size) stuffed toys of sand tiger sharks and green sea turtles are a major standout at the gift shop, but we suspect the intricate patterns of the Ogasawara glassware (and washi tape) will be popular as well.

When you’re ready for a break, stop by the Penguin Cafe for karaage fried chicken doused in sweet and sour sauce, or a sundae made with an addictive salted vanilla ice cream, both of which come decorated with a cute sea turtle pick. Wash it all down with a fancy drink, like the Morning Sun Sunrise Mocktail, made with tart acerola and sweet sauces of dragon fruit and mandarin orange. (For adults 20+, there’s an alcoholic cocktail “Sunset” version made with added rum, too!)

On top of historical spots like Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, travelers shouldn't miss Fukuoka's food scene, with motsu nabe (offal hotpot), mentaiko (spicy cod roe), and famous Hakata ramen―best eaten from a food stall in the Nakasu area of Hakata. Plus, it's full of all sorts of destinations for travelers, like trendy shopping centers, and the beautiful nature of Itoshima and Yanagawa.

  Kagoshima Prefecture played a major role in Japan's modernization as a backdrop for famous historical figures like samurais Saigo Takamori and Okubo Toshimichi, who pushed Japan out of the Edo era and into the Meiji. Because of that, Sengan-en Garden is just one of many historical destinations, and when it comes to attractions Kagoshima has plenty: the active volcano of Sakurajima, popular hot springs Ibusuki Onsen and Kirishima Onsen, World Heritage Site Yakushima Island, even what Japan calls the "island closest to heaven," Amami Oshima. Kagoshima might be found on the very southernmost tip of the southern island of Kyushu, but there's plenty to see.

  The island chain of Okinawa (沖縄) makes up the southernmost tip of Japan, which is why it's also the most tropical area in the country. Thanks to a history of independence and totally distinct political and cultural events, Okinawa has a unique culture, and remnants of the Ryukyu Kingdom are still visible all over the islands. Food, language, traditional dress, it's all a little different! It's also said to be the birthplace of karate.
