This event at Sumiyoshi Taisha, or Sumiyoshi Grand Shrine, celebrates the planting of rice (an important part of life in Japan!) Designated an official Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan, this ceremony has participants carefully plant little rice seedlings, said to be handed down from the gods, into the shrine grounds.
The festivities also include traditional music and dance, including Kagurame dancers performing \”Yaotomemai\” (literally \”a dance by eight maidens\”), samurai rituals carried out by performers in traditional armor, and other dances to celebrate the rice planting!
