北斎とライバルたち
Katsushika Hokusai has achieved international fame in the days since the artist painted and printed his famous works, and in the intervening 300 years or so, artists ranging from the European impressionist movement to contemporary illustration have sited Hokusai's work as an inspiration... but what's less obvious outside of Japan, is that Hokusai was just one of a number of famous and popular ukiyo-e plying their skills in Japan during the Edo period (1603-1868), and the many active artists competed, discussed, assisted, and otherwise influenced each other throughout the period. This unique exhibition features a mix of Hokusai works and a number of ukiyo-e pieces from Hokusai's contemporaries and successors (the famous Utagawa Hiroshige, plus Tōshūsai Sharaku, Keisai Eisen, and Utagawa Kuniyoshi), and the juxtaposition is a great chance to see how the art was in conversation.
