隅田川花火大会
Check out Japan’s oldest firework festival! The Sumida River Fireworks Festival has been going for over 40 years, but its history actually reaches back to an event held almost three hundred years ago, when Tokyoites lit fireworks over the Sumida River in 1733 to celebrate the end of a deadly plague. (Remind you of anything?) These days the festival is one of the most popular summer events in Tokyo, attracting huge crowds of locals and travelers alike to see tens of thousands of fireworks coloring the night sky over the river. Like most crowded events in Japan, the Sumida River Fireworks Festival was canceled during the pandemic, so this post-COVID event packed with international tourists is bound to be a big one!
