What Is “Lawson Day”?
If you’re a die-hard fan of Japanese convenience stores, or just a traveler with a trip to Japan in the works, this one’s for you. Every year Lawson convenience stores celebrate June 3rd as “Lawson Day” (ローソンの日), an anniversary officially recognized by the Japan Anniversary Association as of this year. It marks the date when Lawson opened its very first store in Japan, the Sakurazaka branch, which signaled the arrival of Lawson in Japan from the surprisingly suburban neighborhood of Toyonaka, Osaka back in 1975.
Why June 3rd?
It’s no coincidence that Japan’s very first Lawson opened its doors on June 3rd – it was an intentional marketing choice, decided by Japan’s love of number puns. While it’s a little bit of a stretch, the numbers 6 and 3 can be read as “Ro” (ろー) and “Son” (そん) in Japanese, which phonetically combine into “Roson” – the Japanese pronunciation of Lawson! Because of this fun little pun, the combination of 6 and 3 has even become something of a lucky number combo for many Lawson staff.
2025 Lawson Day Promotions
The Morisugi Challenge: Going Overboard (in a Good Way)
Lawson’s Morisugi Challenge (盛りすぎチャレンジ), which might be roughly translated as the “over-the-top” or “overflowing” challenge, is a popular promotion for the convenience store, and it’s back and bigger than ever to celebrate this major anniversary. For a limited time, popular products are being upsized without any additional cost! Customers can hunt for these special deals at Lawson stores around Japan from June 3rd through Monday, June 30th.
Of course, since this is to celebrate their 50th anniversary, Lawson is apparently preparing to go all out. The convenience store is rolling out a record 41 different upsized products, which makes it the most wide-ranging Morisugi Challenge line-up to date! They’re planning staggered release dates, so you’ll have to keep visiting Lawson throughout the month to catch all the “morisugi” products.
Looking Forward With a Look Back: Examples of Previous Upsized Lawson Products
While Lawson has never gone so far with their Morisugi Challenge promotions before, this isn’t the first time they’ve turned up the volume on some of their best-sellers. To get an idea of what to look forward to in June 2025, here are some of the products from their last Morisugi Challenge back in February.
・Napolitan Spaghetti: more noodles and lots more sauce
・Premium Roll Cake: generous cream filling
・Chashu Mayo Rice Ball: stuffed with extra pork and mayo
・Grilled Pork Bento: upgraded to fill their larger bento box
・Teriyaki Chicken & Egg Sandwich: stuffed to the brim
・Fluffy Cheesecake: more creamy cheese filling
・Rich Pork Ramen: more noodles and more toppings
As is the case with most promotional schemes, these upsized products are available for a limited time and only in limited quantities, so once they’re gone, they’re gone! You’ll also want to keep in mind that not every item will be available at every Lawson store – Okinawa branches are sadly only getting 40 of the 41 products in the first place. It's known for being the smallest prefecture in Japan, by area, but at the same time Kagawa is called the "Udon Prefecture" thanks to its famous sanuki udon. Aside from Kotohiragu Shrine and Ritsurin Garden, the prefecture's small islands are popular, and Kagawa is full of unique destinations, like Angel Road. They say that if you lay eyes on Zenigata Sunae, a huge Kagawa sand painting, you'll never have money troubles ever again.

Fukuoka Prefecture has the highest population on the southern island of Kyushu, with two major cities: Fukuoka and Kitakyushu. Thanks to growing transportation networks, Fukuoka is more accessible than ever, and so are the many local attractions. On top of historical spots like Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, travelers shouldn't miss Fukuoka's food scene, with motsu nabe (offal hotpot), mentaiko (spicy cod roe), and famous Hakata ramen―best eaten from a food stall in the Nakasu area of Hakata. Plus, it's full of all sorts of destinations for travelers, like trendy shopping centers, and the beautiful nature of Itoshima and Yanagawa.

Kagoshima Prefecture played a major role in Japan's modernization as a backdrop for famous historical figures like samurais Saigo Takamori and Okubo Toshimichi, who pushed Japan out of the Edo era and into the Meiji. Because of that, Sengan-en Garden is just one of many historical destinations, and when it comes to attractions Kagoshima has plenty: the active volcano of Sakurajima, popular hot springs Ibusuki Onsen and Kirishima Onsen, World Heritage Site Yakushima Island, even what Japan calls the "island closest to heaven," Amami Oshima. Kagoshima might be found on the very southernmost tip of the southern island of Kyushu, but there's plenty to see.

The island chain of Okinawa (沖縄) makes up the southernmost tip of Japan, which is why it's also the most tropical area in the country. Thanks to a history of independence and totally distinct political and cultural events, Okinawa has a unique culture, and remnants of the Ryukyu Kingdom are still visible all over the islands. Food, language, traditional dress, it's all a little different! It's also said to be the birthplace of karate.
