Japan is a dream destination for many, with its busy cities, peaceful nature, and delicious food, but a trip to Japan means a lot of walking, which can leave you exhausted. To enjoy your trip from start to finish, we know how important it is to tackle aches and pains before they become a problem. Check out a few of our Hisamitsu® Pharmaceutical recommendations, and plan ahead to keep yourself happy and healthy during your dream trip to Japan!

① Medications in Japan? Try Hisamitsu® Pharmaceutical

While you might not be familiar with the name Hisamitsu® Pharmaceutical, you might have heard of Salonpas® before, since these patches made by Hisamitsu® are a popular form of pain relief in and outside of Japan. Hisamitsu® Pharmaceutical Co., Inc. manufactures, sells, and works to import and export all kinds of pharmaceuticals, quasi-drugs, and medical devices. Overseas, however, it’s particularly well known for topical treatments like Salonpas®, which uses the innovative patch form to target pain precisely. (Convenient for a busy modern lifestyle, especially when traveling!)

Since aches, pains, and other inconveniences are the last things you want to deal with during your trip to Japan, we’ve put together a list of a few Hisamitsu® product recommendations to support your whole body during a busy trip, or your busy daily life!

② A Quick Guide to Buying Medicine in Japan

Before taking a look at recommendations from Hisamitsu®, let’s briefly run through how to purchase medicine in Japan. You might be wondering “do I need a prescription for medications in Japan?” or “can I even buy anything useful?” To answer those questions, it’s important to know that in Japan, similar to many other countries, medications are broadly divided into two categories:

1. Prescription Drugs: These, as you might surmise, require a doctor’s prescription. Examples include antibiotics, and medications used to control blood pressure or glucose levels.

2. Over-the-Counter (OTC) Drugs: These can be purchased without a prescription at many drugstores. They are officially divided into three categories:

ClassificationExamples
First-Class OTC Drugs (第一類医薬品)hair growth treatments
Second-Class OTC Drugs (第二類医薬品)cold medicine (like Pabron), painkillers (like ibuprofen)
Third-Class OTC Drugs (第三類医薬品)vitamins, supplements, calcium, medicines for improving liver function

💡 What to Know About Japan’s OTC Drugs:

→ All three types of OTC drugs can be purchased at regular pharmacies.

→ To purchase first-class OTC drugs, you will need to listen to an explanation from a pharmacist first.

→ Second and third-class OTC drugs can be purchased freely, though a pharmacist or registered seller may offer an explanation.

In short, even foreign travelers can go ahead and purchase products classified as OTC drugs in Japan without any worries.

③ Pain-Relief Patches

One of the most popular products from Hisamitsu® is the Salonpas® patch, but that’s not the brand’s only product that comes in an easy-to-use patch form. Check out some of the other options from Hisamitsu® to find the perfect patch to suit your needs!

For Muscular Aches and Pains, Sprains, & Lower Back Pain Try…

Nobinobi® Salonsip® FIT® α Odor-Free | Third-Class OTC Drug

Salonsip® offers a gel-type patch that feels pleasantly refreshing the moment it’s applied to the skin, and the main active ingredient, glycol salicylate, helps relieve pain and effectively suppress inflammation. The formula also contains vitamin E (tocopherol acetate), which protects the skin during use. The patch itself is uniquely designed to make it easy to apply, even on joints, with rounded corners and high flexibility.

The patches come in compact, resealable packaging (much like wet wipes), which makes them convenient to carry on the go. Plus, the “Baripita Sheet” perforation design in the center of the backing film allows for easy application by simply pulling the two sides apart, and the powerful seal on the packaging keeps moisture out and preserves the patches inside. One more major benefit? The odorless design means there’s no medicinal smell to bother you while using the patches to relieve pain.

The area is famous for Sapporo Beer, plus brewing and distilling in general, along with fantastic snow festivals and breathtaking national parks. Foodies should look for Hokkaido's famous potatoes, cantaloupe, dairy products, soup curry, and miso ramen!

    • Niki, in south-west Hokkaido, is about 30 minutes from Otaru. The small town is rich with natural resources, fresh water, and clean air, making it a thriving center for fruit farms. Cherries, tomatoes, and grapes are all cultivated in the area, and thanks to a growing local wine industry, it's quickly becoming a food and wine hotspot. Together with the neighboring town of Yoichi, it's a noted area for wine tourism.

    • Niseko is about two hours from New Chitose Airport, in the western part of Hokkaido. It's one of Japan's most noted winter resort areas, and a frequent destination for international visitors. That's all because of the super high-quality powder snow, which wins the hearts of beginners and experts alike, bringing them back for repeat visits. That's not all, though, it's also a great place to enjoy Hokkaido's culinary scene and some beautiful onsen (hot springs).

    • Otaru is in western Hokkaido, about 30 minutes from Sapporo Station. The city thrived around its busy harbor in the 19th and 20th centuries thanks to active trade and fishing, and the buildings remaining from that period are still popular attractions, centered around Otaru Canal. With its history as a center of fishing, it's no surprise that the area's fresh sushi is a must-try. Otaru has over 100 sushi shops, quite a few of which are lined up on Sushiya Dori (Sushi Street).

International skiiers are especially fond of Zao Onsen Ski Resort and Gassan Ski Resort, and in recent years visitors have been drawn to the area to see the mystical sight of local frost-covered trees. Some destinations are popular regardless of the season, like Risshakuji Temple, AKA Yamadera, Ginzan Onsen's nostalgic old-fashioned streets, and Zao's Okama Lake, all great for taking pictures. Yamagata is also the place to try Yonezawa beef, one of the top 3 varieties of wagyu beef.
