Becoming a new parent is never easy, and for first-time parents it’s a brand-new journey filled with smiles, tears, and surprises. As friends or family to young parents, one thing we can do is offer a useful gift or special memento to help make this period of life one full of warm memories, and hopefully a little easier, too. If you’re looking for a Japanese gift for a special little one (or you’re a parent yourself but not sure what to buy in Japan), take a look at these six popular childcare items recommended by Japanese moms, each one carefully chosen as a great gift for new parents, and all of them easy to find throughout Japan!
① Meiji RakuRaku Cubes

A trusted favorite among many Japanese mothers, Meiji RakuRaku Cube are a convenient milk alternative, baby formula powder that comes pressed into handy cube shapes to eliminate the need for measuring spoons. Using the cubes to make baby formula is truly quick and simple – just drop the cubes into a baby bottle, add hot water (at least 70°C), and watch the cubes dissolve instantly. The milk is ready for baby in no time!

The compact cubes come packaged in groups of, and even if you don’t use them all at once, you can simply fold down the plastic and clip it to keep the air out, so you can use the rest later. The packaging design makes the cubes a convenient choice both at home and on the go.

The formula comes in two different varieties, Meiji Hohoemi RakuRaku Cube for newborns all the way up to 1 year old, and Meiji Step RakuRaku Cube for toddlers aged 1~3 years.
Meiji Hohoemi RakuRaku Cubes (for infants 0~1 year old)

This formula is designed specifically for infants, from birth until they’re just about one year old. Developed through meticulous research to resemble real breast milk as closely as possible, Meiji produces the only powdered milk in Japan that contains both DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and ARA (arachidonic acid) in levels comparable to breast milk. It also includes essential proteins for growth, along with zinc sulfate, sodium ferrous citrate (iron), and fructooligosaccharides, all of which support a baby’s physical and cognitive development.
Meiji Step RakuRaku Cubes (for toddlers 1~3 years old)

As your little one grows into the active toddler stage (1~3 years), bursting with energy and curiosity, basic nutrition remains vital, even as they start eating more solid food. Meiji Step RakuRaku Cubes were developed to supplement your toddler’s daily diet, providing nutrients that may be lacking.
This formula inclues key ingredients like fructooligosaccharides, to support digestion and nutrient absorption, as well as ferric pyrophosphate as a source of iron, and DHA to aid brain development and learning.
Bonus! You Can Even Cook with Meiji RakuRaku Formula

You might not expect it, but the Meiji Step RakuRaku Cubes (for ages 1~3) isn’t just for drinking, it can actually be used in cooking to boost iron and calcium intake, too! It’s a fun way to provide key nutrients that young children often lack. Their official website has a few recipes, like this simple recipe for a creamy Vegetable Stew – easy to prepare and packed with nutrients for your little one!
Ingredients
| Meiji Step RakuRaku Cubes | 5 Cubes |
| Water | 200 ml |
| Potatoes | 50 g |
| Carrots | 30 g |
| Broccoli | 10 g |
| Stock Cubes/Powder | 1 tsp |
| Potato Starch | 1 tsp (dissolved in 1 tbsp water) |
Instructions
① Dice the potato (2cm cubes) and the carrot (1 cm cubes), and cut the broccoli into small florets.
② Bring the water to a boil, add the stock cubes, potatoes, and carrots. Simmer on low heat for about 7 minutes.
③Add the broccoli, then turn off the heat. Add the Meiji Step RakuRaku Cubes and stir until dissolved.
④ Turn the heat back on low, add the dissolved potato starch, stir until thickened, then turn off the heat.
And you’re done! You’ve got a warm, nutritious vegetable stew, all ready to eat! The Meiji Step RakuRaku Cubes are really versatile, great for bottle-feeding while traveling in Japan, or for easy home-cooked meals when you get back home.
② Japanese Baby Bottles

Once you’ve got a new supply of formula cubes, you’ll need something to put them in, and fortunately Japan is famous for producing extremely high-quality baby bottles, trusted by families both in and outside Japan.
One long-time favorite is Pigeon, Japan’s No.1 baby bottle brand. Their “Natural Feel” series is especially popular these days, thanks to the shape carefully designed under the guidance of a large body of research, which is made to closely resemble a mother’s breast, and making feeding time easier. The different nipples can also be swapped as your baby grows.
Another premium choice is Dr. Betta, a brand that specializes in handmade bottles manufactured by Japanese glass artisans. Their signature L-shaped Curve Bottle allows babies to drink in a more natural lying position, reducing the risk of choking and swallowing air.
③ Bibs for Meal Time

If you’ve ever seen a child learning to eat on their own, you’ll know they still struggle with spoons as their muscles and motor skills develop. Sometimes they can’t help but play with their food, too, using their hands and diving right in. To avoid excess outfit changes, bibs are an essential item!
One beloved brand among Japanese families is MARLMARL, which has completely redefined baby bibs. More than just functional, they come in all kinds of unique designs, often so stylish you forget they’re bibs! Their signature 360° round bib absorbs drool and dribbles from all angles, and if any one section gets dirty, you can just rotate it instead of trying to change bibs constantly.

④ Baby Tableware Sets

Another adorable must-have from Japan is the children’s tableware from Mamamanma, which comes in sets including a bowl, a divided plate, and a matching spoon and fork, all sized just right for little hands. The safe materials, feather-light weight, and softly rounded shapes make them ideal for toddlers having fun learning to eat.

If you prepare a stew or one of the other dishes using Meiji Step RakuRaku Cubes and serve it in a Mamamanma set, you get a meal that’s both nutritious and adorable. Can’t beat that! Mamamanma’s table sets can be found at 10mois, a stylish children’s goods shop in Aoyama, Tokyo, and also in Takashimaya department stores across Japan.
⑤ Kawaii Baby Clothes

No gift list would be complete without baby clothes, and you know Japan’s going to have some cute options – trusted brands include Akachan Honpo, Nishimatsuya, Birthday, and 10mois. Each of these shops has a reputation for high-quality items, manufactured to Japan’s meticulous standards, ensuring comfort and safety for little ones.
On top of the quality, these Japanese brands also produce adorable designs, including options for every season. (Since ancient times, Japanese culture has had strong ties to seasonal changes, and it still influences everything, including baby essentials.) Shopping for cute baby clothes is fun for you, and a carefully chosen baby outfit always makes a thoughtful gift – any new parent who receives it will surely feel that love and care.
⑥ Kid-Friendly Bath & Skincare Products

Bath time can become a joyful bonding moment with the right bath and skincare products, made with gentle formulas made for babies’ delicate skin, and Japan has a wide array of options, from foaming washes to liquid soaps.
One trusted brand is Arau Baby, popular for their products manufactured without lots of additives, making them safe for sensitive baby skin.
For after-bath skincare, many moms recommend items like the Mama & Kids Milky Lotion or Pigeon’s Baby Milk Lotion. Both are lightweight, moisturizing, and gentle, free from harsh irritants, which ensures your baby’s skin is well cared for.
Where to Buy Baby Goods in Japan

Baby and maternity goods are easy to find, so you don’t have to go out of your way to shop during your trip to Japan! There are a number of brand-specific stores like MARLMARL, Mamamanma, or 10mois (easily found in major commercial districts around Tokyo and other major cities), but you can also visit kids’ and baby stores like Akachan Honpo, Nishimatsuya, and Birthday. These shops stock a wide range of baby essentials and interesting products in one place, making it easy for parents and even gift shoppers to find what they’re looking for.
Not only is Japan known for high-quality products, but prices tend to be quite reasonable. Some stores, like Akachan Honpo, even offer tax-free shopping for foreign shoppers. Combined with the weak yen, this makes baby shopping an especially good deal right now!
