Planning a trip to Japan during Golden Week 2026? You’re in for an unforgettable adventure filled with festivals, flowers, and fireworks – as well as some crazy crowds! This year, Golden Week falls from April 29th to May 6th, and this annual week of holidays is always one of Japan’s most popular travel seasons. It’s a period of great weather, beautiful springtime landscapes, and vibrant cultural celebrations! Whether you already have your itinerary set or you’re dreaming about your next trip, here are 5 must-see events across Japan during Golden Week.
1. Ashikaga Wisteria Flower Festival (Tochigi)

Move over, cherry blossoms – wisteria season might just be where the real magic happens. (At least according to a certain demon-based anime!) At Ashikaga Flower Park, these spring blooms create a world straight from a fairytale, with an 80-meter-long wisteria tunnel and a majestic 150-year-old wisteria tree, with flowery tendrils cascading like a lavender waterfall. In the evening, strategically placed lights turn this floral wonderland into a romantic dreamscape. This springtime attraction is a must-visit for flower lovers and photographers alike!
Dates: April 11 ~ May 20, 2026
Hours: 8:00 – 20:30 (shorter hours in mid-April)
Location: Ashikaga Flower Park, Tochigi Prefecture

2. Hakata Dontaku Festival (Fukuoka)

One of Japan’s largest and most colorful festivals during Golden Week, the Hakata Dontaku Festival transforms the streets of Fukuoka into an open-air stage for a massive dance celebration! Expect yukata-clad dancers, traditional performances, live music, and plenty of festive energy. If you want to experience a taste of traditional Japanese culture and love a good parade, it’s worth visiting Japan’s southwestern island of Kyushu for this one.

Location: Fukuoka City Hall Plaza, Fukuoka Prefecture

3. Naha Haarii Dragonboat Races (Okinawa)

When people think of Japanese culture, their minds often jump to the traditions of Kyoto, but down on Japan’s sub-tropical island chain of Okinawa, Ryukyu culture guides local life. With roots in the Ryukyu kingdom, these Haarii boat races are held to pray to the gods of the sea, giving thanks while asking for safe voyages and a good catch. Other Haarii races in Okinawa are held later in the summer, but you can head to Naha during Golden Week to catch teams of a dozen crew members cutting through the water in their beautifully decorated sabani boats, once used by brave seafarers to traverse the oceans surrounding Okinawa.
Dates: May 3~5, 2026
Location: Naha Port, Naka, Okinawa

4. Saku Balloon Festival (Nagano)

Looking for a laid-back family-friendly experience over Golden Week? Head to the picturesque prefecture of Nagano for the Saku Balloon Festival, where vibrant hot air balloons float gracefully against a scenic mountain backdrop. Enjoy local food stalls, music, and fun activities perfect for kids. The atmosphere is all cozy small town, but colorful displays of balloons floating through the sky are anything but small!
Date: May 3~5, 2026
Location: Chikumagawa Sports Garden, Saku, Nagano Prefecture

5. Kamo Kurabeuma Sacred Horse Race (Kyoto)

Step back in time at the Kamo Kurabeuma Horse Race, part of Kyoto’s historic Aoi Matsuri Festival. Held every May 5th, this traditional ritual sees two horsemen racing through Kamigamo Shrine grounds – not just for sport, but as a sacred tribute to the gods for peace and a good harvest. It’s an impressive display of cultural heritage and ceremonial grandeur!
