What Is Akabane?

Located just 13 minutes from Shinjuku, Akabane is a neighborhood bursting with old-school Tokyo charm, with narrow alleyways, cozy izakayas, and a laid-back vibe. As the birthplace of the “senbero” (an establishment cheap enough that to get drinks and snacks for just 1,000 yen), the area is famous for affordable drinking, and it’s the kind of place where locals go to unwind – or where visitors can get a taste of real Tokyo nightlife, less than 20 minutes from Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ueno, or Tokyo.
The “Akabane Local Nightlife Tour” Experience

To explore the depths of Akabane, the JWM team joined the Akabane Local Nightlife Tour, a bar-hopping tour* led in English from 6 to 10 pm, visiting three unique spots typically only populated by locals. One highlight of the experience is the chance to check out Japanese-style “snack bars,” or “sunakku,” which are intimate establishments that encourage chatting and personal interactions with the “mama-san” (owner) – but are often members-only. This tour can be customized to fit your preferences, but this time, it included a traditional yakiniku izakaya, a spooky themed bar, and a classic, intimate snack bar run by a charismatic mama-san.
*All stops involve alcohol consumption, which means participants must be 20 or older!
1st Stop: Arriving at Akabane Station

Meeting at JR Akabane Station, the tour began at 6pm sharp with a warm welcome, and the guide offered an introduction to the Akabane area while walking to the first establishment.
2nd Stop: Yakiniku Horumon Takeda

A cozy izakaya specializing in Japanese “yakiniku” barbecue, this first venue offers plenty of appetizers and meat for the table grill, including some unusual cuts that are popular in Japan, but less common elsewhere. With a tap offering self-serve lemon sours at the table, and an all-you-can-drink system, the vibe is relaxed and sociable.
3rd Stop: Akabane Reien

Next, the tour headed to Akabane Reien, a snack bar with a spooky Japanese horror theme. The creepy decor and surprising “tricks” like hidden doors make it a playful and entertaining experience, and local patrons are quick to warm up to fresh faces – karaoke quickly became the highlight of the stop for the JWM team.
4th Stop: Snack Sofina

The final venue, Snack Sofina, offers a more traditional snack bar experience… with a bit of a twist! The friendly mama-san plying guests with drinks and conversation at Snack Sofina is actually a charming Romanian woman who has embedded herself into the Akabane nightlife scene. To bring the tour to a close, drinks flowed, karaoke continued, and conversations with local regulars rounded out the evening beautifully.
