Red Spider Lilies (Higanbana) in Japan
Known as Higanbana (彼岸花) or Manjushage (曼珠沙華) in Japanese, these striking flowers begin blooming in mid-September, marking the arrival of autumn in Japan. While spider lilies traditionally symbolized death in many parts of Asia, and have even been called “ghost flowers,” they’re now celebrated nationwide for their fleeting beauty, becoming social media favorites for their vivid red displays.
Kinchakuda Manjushage Festival

At Kinchakuda (巾着田) you’ll find over five million red spider lilies blanketing the riverside, creating one of Japan’s most breathtaking seasonal views. The Kinchakuda Manjushage Festival, held every September, celebrates this natural spectacle with food stalls, drinks, and even unique souvenirs like spider lily tea.

Festival Access & Tips
Planning your festival visit is easy, especially if you’re coming from Tokyo’s Yamanote line! From Ikebukuro Station, take the Seibu Ikebukuro Line to Hanno Station, transfer to the Seibu Chichibu Line, and get off at Koma Station. Simply follow the crowd along a quiet river lined with benches (perfect for a picnic on the way) – the flowers are about a 15-minute walk from the station.

Kinchakuda itself isn’t large, so if you’re in a rush you can technically circle the area in about 30 minutes, but most visitors linger to take photos and enjoy the atmosphere. The flowerbeds are fenced off to protect the plants, but photo spots along the paths offer fantastic views. Visit early in the morning to avoid crowds!
