What Is the Seishun 18 Kippu?
The Seishun 18 Kippu (青春18きっぷ) is a nationwide JR discount ticket that allows unlimited travel on ordinary and rapid JR trains (and some BRT/ferry routes) for either 3 or 5 consecutive days. Although the Japanese name implies use by young travelers, there are no age limits, which means anyone can use this discount ticket to explore Japan on the cheap.
What’s New in 2025
Although this pass has been a popular way to travel for years, JR fully revamped the Seishun 18 Kippu in winter 2024. It’s now available in two versions, each for individual passengers:
▶︎ 3-Day Pass: ¥10,000 (approx. ¥3,333/day)
▶︎ 5-Day Pass: ¥12,050 (approx. ¥2,410/day)
Passengers must choose the start date when they purchase the ticket, and travel days must be consecutive. The updates have made the pass a little less flexible than previous versions, but it now works at automatic ticket gates, eliminating the inconvenience of manual stamping.
How to Buy and Use the Seishun 18 Kippu
Unlike most of JR’s various transportation passes, this special discount ticket is only available during Japan’s main travel seasons, when citizens, young and old, often travel back to their hometowns. In 2025, those dates are as follows:

The ticket can be purchased at any JR ticket office or select travel agencies. When your selected travel dates arrive, the pass can be inserted directly into automatic gates like a normal paper ticket, allowing easy access to unlimited JR travel. Remember, each pass is valid for one traveler only.
Where to Travel With JR’s Discount Ticket
The Seishun 18 Kippu covers JR local and rapid lines, JR BRT routes, and the JR Miyajima Ferry (with an additional fee). It does not include shinkansen or limited express trains, except for the optional Hokkaido-Shinkansen route (Shin-Aomori ⇄ Kikonai) which can be added to the pass for an additional 4,650 yen. The ticket is mainly limited to JR transportation, but limited through-travel is allowed on short sections of the Aoimori Railway, Ainokaze Toyama Railway, Ishikawa Railway, and Hapi Line Fukui. All other private lines require separate tickets.
Perfect for slow travelers enjoying a leisurely multi-day trip in Japan, or budget-conscious sightseers ready to really take in Japan’s scenic countryside, the Seishun 18 Kippu can be used to go just about anywhere in Japan! Use it to venture out of the big city, and discover scenic areas like Gujo Hachiman in Gifu, surprising destinations like Toyokawa Inari Temple in Aichi, and unique new routes through familiar areas, like Shizuoka’s many train routes within view of Mt. Fuji. The Seishun 18 Kippu’s recent update has traded a little of its old flexibility for simplicity, but that makes it easier than ever for visiting travelers to take advantage of the great deal!

Horaiji. It's known for being the smallest prefecture in Japan, by area, but at the same time Kagawa is called the "Udon Prefecture" thanks to its famous sanuki udon. Aside from Kotohiragu Shrine and Ritsurin Garden, the prefecture's small islands are popular, and Kagawa is full of unique destinations, like Angel Road. They say that if you lay eyes on Zenigata Sunae, a huge Kagawa sand painting, you'll never have money troubles ever again.

Fukuoka Prefecture has the highest population on the southern island of Kyushu, with two major cities: Fukuoka and Kitakyushu. Thanks to growing transportation networks, Fukuoka is more accessible than ever, and so are the many local attractions. On top of historical spots like Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, travelers shouldn't miss Fukuoka's food scene, with motsu nabe (offal hotpot), mentaiko (spicy cod roe), and famous Hakata ramen―best eaten from a food stall in the Nakasu area of Hakata. Plus, it's full of all sorts of destinations for travelers, like trendy shopping centers, and the beautiful nature of Itoshima and Yanagawa.

Kagoshima Prefecture played a major role in Japan's modernization as a backdrop for famous historical figures like samurais Saigo Takamori and Okubo Toshimichi, who pushed Japan out of the Edo era and into the Meiji. Because of that, Sengan-en Garden is just one of many historical destinations, and when it comes to attractions Kagoshima has plenty: the active volcano of Sakurajima, popular hot springs Ibusuki Onsen and Kirishima Onsen, World Heritage Site Yakushima Island, even what Japan calls the "island closest to heaven," Amami Oshima. Kagoshima might be found on the very southernmost tip of the southern island of Kyushu, but there's plenty to see.
