Kiyosumi Shirakawa

Tucked away in eastern Tokyo, Kiyosumi Shirakawa was once a merchant and warehouse area, but it’s now a peaceful hub for artisan coffee, Edo culture, art galleries, and strollable gardens, perfect for travelers who’ve seen some of Tokyo’s major sights and want a more local experience!
Morning: Coffee & Gardens

Start at Kiyosumi-Shirakawa Station, and head out Exit A3 to grab breakfast at CLANN BY THE RIVER (the clam chowder set will run you ¥1,650) or the casual PARK STAND TOKYO nearby. Next, walk 8 minutes to Kiyosumi Gardens, a serene Japanese landscape garden with stepping stones and koi ponds. Entry is just ¥150! We recommend spending an hour soaking in the seasonal beauty.
Midday: Edo History & Lunch

Stop by Edo-Miyageya Takahashi to shop for souvenirs among the selection of Edo-style toys and local Fukagawa Meshi no Moto (clam rice mix). Next, visit the Fukagawa Edo Museum (¥400, or ¥300 with a Kiyosumi Gardens ticket) to wander a life-sized Edo-period townscape and learn about daily life in historical Tokyo. Then walk about ten minutes to Dreadnought Books & Cafe for a cozy curry lunch (¥1,700). If any of the books in the shop call out to you, you can purchase them to read as you eat!
Afternoon: Art & Shopping

Head to the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (MOT), about 10 minutes away, to explore contemporary work from both within Japan and abroad. You can also stop into the museum cafe “Sandwich Upstairs” for a treat. If you have time, explore some of Kiyosumi Shirakawa’s specialty shops like Cheese no Koe – specializing in Hokkaido cheese – and Rikashitsu, which sells scientific glassware reimagined as home decor.
Evening: Dinner in Tokyo
There are certainly places to eat dinner in Kiyosumi Shirakawa, but you can also take a short train ride to Tsukishima (about 5 minutes on the Oedo Line) for sizzling Monjayaki, or even head to Kinshicho (6 minutes on the Hanzomon Line) for yakitori, ramen, and local izakaya vibes!
