Head to Tokyo Mega Illumination 2026~2027 for one last year of spectacular Tokyo winter lights at Oi Racecourse! From breathtaking light displays and fun photo spots to horse-themed events and other family-friendly activities, here’s what you need to know about this grand finale!

Oi Racecourse (also known as Tokyo City Keiba) was the first racecourse in Japan to introduce nighttime horse racing and illuminate the grounds for evening events, with night races that came to be known affectionately as “Twinkle Races.” In 2018, however, the racecourse took the nighttime festivities to the next level and began hosting a winter “illumination” on days without races, eventually turning it into the event now known as Tokyo Mega Illumination. Today, the racecourse comes alive with lights for the winter, offering seasonal attractions and special events, and completely transforming the racecourse into a winter evening destination for visitors of all ages—not just a place to watch horse racing.

Tokyo’s Most Popular Illumination: It’s Tokyo Mega Illumination’s Final Season!

ภาพมุมกว้างของงานโตเกียว เมก้า อิลลูมิ งานประดับไฟสุดยิ่งใหญ่ในโตเกียว

In Japan, winter is the season when cities across the nation sparkle with light displays they like to call “illuminations,” and Tokyo Mega Illumination (often shortened to “Tokyo Mega Illumi”) is one of Tokyo’s best-known winter light events. Held every year at Oi Racecourse, this large-scale outdoor illumination event has ranked No. 1 nationwide among “Illuminations People Most Want to Visit” (according to Walker Plus) for six consecutive years since 2020! And not only is it massively popular, but it’s surprisingly easy to access—not only from central Tokyo, but also from Haneda Airport.

Despite the event’s success, however, the 2026~2027 season will be the last for Tokyo Mega Illumination as we know it. The event has been a winter destination for the past nine years, but due to facility improvements planned at Oi Racecourse, the expansive light displays will all be shut down indefinitely. That means this season is the last chance to enjoy some of Tokyo Mega Illumination’s beloved attractions, from the Edo Cherry Blossom Tunnel and the Primeval Japanese Landscape to the giant Mega Tree. Don’t miss the opportunity to see them for yourself before it’s too late!

Light Display Highlights at Tokyo Mega Illumination

The Forest of the Mega Tree

One of the event’s most iconic highlights is the enormous illuminated “Mega Tree” at the center of everything! The towering tree is lit up with synchronized light and sound effects, making it a memorable sight.

Around the Mega Tree you’ll find the Aurora Forest, where colorful laser lights create a dreamy effect reminiscent of the northern lights. The changing music, shimmering lights, and lively fountains come together in a dramatic display that feels so otherworldly you might forget you’re still in Tokyo.

A Traditional Japanese Landscape Made of Light

Part of what makes Tokyo Mega Illumination so special is the way it uses light to recreate scenery that feels unmistakably Japanese, particularly in the area referred to as the “Primeval Japanese Landscape,” inspired by the traditional rural scenery of sprawling rice paddies, far from Japan’s big cities. The little shoots of light spread across the landscape and shift in color in time with the music, reflecting the quiet beauty of Japan’s countryside and the changing seasons.

A Walk Through the Edo Cherry Blossom Tunnel

A short walk from the Primeval Japanese Landscape is the Edo Cherry Blossom Tunnel, an illuminated arch that stretches 100 meters across the racecourse grounds, completely lined with little lights shaped like cherry blossoms.

From a distance, the tunnel looks like a swath of tiny fairy lights, but take a close look, and you’ll see that each individual light is shaped like one of Japan’s beloved sakura blossoms! It’s a gorgeous spot to take pictures, and despite the winter weather, walking through this light display feels a spring stroll beneath the cherry blossoms in full bloom.

Meet the Horses While Enjoying the Lights!

Tokyo Mega Illumination takes place at a racecourse, and that means visitors can also check out some real horses! The event brings the sparkle of Japan’s illumination culture to the world of horses, creating a truly unique evening destination in Tokyo, with a variety of special horse-related events.

If you’re visiting with kids, you won’t want to miss the “Miniature Horse & Pony Event”—basically a meet and greet for the racecourse’s celebrity horses. Line up to see the miniature horses and ponies up close, pet them, and even take photos together. Visitors of all ages get to enjoy the experience, making it a fun area for families to visit together.

โซน Horse Watch ทุ่งหญ้าเลี้ยงม้า ชมม้าแระได้อย่างใกล้ชิด

Want to spend even more time with the horses? Stop by the paddock to join the “Horse Watch,” and admire the miniature horses and ponies as they relax and graze in their grassy enclosure. As the little horses nibble at the winter greenery, lay down, and frolic to and fro, it feels like visiting the tiniest ranch.

โชว์ Lead Horse and Fountain Show การแสดงที่นำม้านำขบวนมาร่วมกับน้ำพุ

Oi Racecourse doesn’t just keep miniature horses, however. During the Lead Horse and Fountain Show, the racecourse’s lead horses clip-clop in a line and arrive at the fountains, where they move together with the water, the lights, and the music for one big, breathtaking production! It’s another big hit with families.

The World’s Cutest Balance Ball, Rody, Returns for the Final Season!

There’s more to see for Tokyo Mega Illumination’s 2026~2027 finale season—Rody, the horse-shaped bouncy balance ball toy loved by children around the world, is returning to add even more fun to the event.

Rody Light-Up Candy / Glow-in-the-Dark Rody Keychain

Visitors will find a special area dedicated to Rody, along with some cute horse-themed collab merchandise, including a new flavor of the Rody Light-Up Candy and a glowing Rody keychain (a particular favorite last year)!

กิจกรรม Stamp Rally เก็บสะสมแสตมป์ แลกรับของรางวัล

Lean into the Japanese entertainment culture and join the Stamp Rally, which takes visitors around the venue collecting stamps. If you complete your stamp collection, you can enter a prize drawing for Rody and Tokyo Mega Illumination merchandise.

Plus, Rody fans can also join special Rody meet-and-greet photo events at the Paddock from November 21~23, 2026, and January 2~3, 2027, where visitors can see Rody up close and take commemorative photos.

*Further details TBA—check the official website. Events may be changed or canceled due to weather or other unavoidable circumstances.

More Illumination Recommendations & Photo Ops

โซน Color Shadow สร้างเงาของตัวเองลงบนแสงไฟหลากสีสัน

Families and visitors with young children will be happy to find plenty of interactive activities throughout the venue, including a space called “Color Shadow.” Kids can move around in front of a wall illuminated with colorful lights, wriggling around and watching each silhouette appear in a mix of different colors. Little ones have a blast playing with light and shadow and getting a little bit of that extra energy out.

โซนบันไดสายรุ้ง จุดถ่ายรูปยอดฮิตภายในงาน

The Rainbow Grand Staircase is always a popular spot, but the visual impact of a staircase illuminated in bright rainbow colors makes it an especially great place for photos. Stand among the lights and your dark silhouette appears as a stark outline against the staircase—try a few different poses to get a memorable photo!

⭐️ Tokyo Illumination Tips: How to Make the Most of Tokyo Mega Illumination

ครอบครัวสนุกกับการเล่นแสงและเงาที่โซน Color Shadow

It might just be your last chance to experience this once-in-a-lifetime destination, so the Japankuru team has put together a few tips to help you get the most out of your visit to Tokyo Mega Illumination!

The most important thing to keep in mind is that Tokyo Mega Illumination is an outdoor event, and that you’ll spend most of your time on your feet. We recommend wearing warm clothing and comfortable walking shoes so you can stay comfortable and focus on the experience, without worrying about the cold.

Also, be careful when planning your itinerary—Tokyo Mega Illumination is not open every day. Check the calendar on the official website before planning your visit. Event schedules inside the venue also vary from day to day, so if you’re aiming to check out a particular attraction or event (especially horse-related events), check the latest updates online to make sure you’re planning your trip for the right day.

Hokkaido (北海道) is the northernmost of the four main islands that make up Japan. The area is famous for Sapporo Beer, plus brewing and distilling in general, along with fantastic snow festivals and breathtaking national parks. Foodies should look for Hokkaido's famous potatoes, cantaloupe, dairy products, soup curry, and miso ramen!

    • Niki, in south-west Hokkaido, is about 30 minutes from Otaru. The small town is rich with natural resources, fresh water, and clean air, making it a thriving center for fruit farms. Cherries, tomatoes, and grapes are all cultivated in the area, and thanks to a growing local wine industry, it's quickly becoming a food and wine hotspot. Together with the neighboring town of Yoichi, it's a noted area for wine tourism.

    • Niseko is about two hours from New Chitose Airport, in the western part of Hokkaido. It's one of Japan's most noted winter resort areas, and a frequent destination for international visitors. That's all because of the super high-quality powder snow, which wins the hearts of beginners and experts alike, bringing them back for repeat visits. That's not all, though, it's also a great place to enjoy Hokkaido's culinary scene and some beautiful onsen (hot springs).

    • Otaru is in western Hokkaido, about 30 minutes from Sapporo Station. The city thrived around its busy harbor in the 19th and 20th centuries thanks to active trade and fishing, and the buildings remaining from that period are still popular attractions, centered around Otaru Canal. With its history as a center of fishing, it's no surprise that the area's fresh sushi is a must-try. Otaru has over 100 sushi shops, quite a few of which are lined up on Sushiya Dori (Sushi Street).

Every February, the Sapporo Snow Festival is held in Odori Park―one of the biggest events in Hokkaido. It's also a hotspot for great food, known as a culinary treasure chest, and Sapporo is a destination for ramen, grilled mutton, soup curry, and of course Hokkaido's beloved seafood.

    • Consisting of six prefectures, the Tohoku Region (東北地方) is up in the northeastern part of Japan's main island. It's the source of plenty of the nation's agriculture (which means great food), and packed with beautiful scenery. Explore the region's stunning mountains, lakes, and hot springs!

    • Akita Prefecture is on the Sea of Japan, in the northern reaches of Japan's northern Tohoku region. Akita has more officially registered important intangible culture assets than anywhere else in Japan, and to this day visitors can experience traditional culture throughout the prefecture, from the Oga Peninsula's Namahage (registered with UNESCO as a part of Japan's intangible cultural heritage), to the Tohoku top 3 Kanto Festival. Mysterious little spots like the Oyu Stone Circle Site and Ryu no Atama (Dragon's Head) are also worth a visit!

Yamagata Prefecture is up against the Sea of Japan, in the southern part of the Tohoku region, and it's especially popular in winter, when travelers soak in the onsen (hot springs) and ski down snowy slopes. International skiiers are especially fond of Zao Onsen Ski Resort and Gassan Ski Resort, and in recent years visitors have been drawn to the area to see the mystical sight of local frost-covered trees. Some destinations are popular regardless of the season, like Risshakuji Temple, AKA Yamadera, Ginzan Onsen's nostalgic old-fashioned streets, and Zao's Okama Lake, all great for taking pictures. Yamagata is also the place to try Yonezawa beef, one of the top 3 varieties of wagyu beef.

    • Japan's most densely populated area, the Kanto Region (関東地方) includes 7 prefectures: Gunma, Tochigi, Ibaraki, Saitama, Tokyo, Chiba, and Kanagawa, which means it also contains the Tokyo Metropolitan Area. In modern-day Japan, Kanto is the cultural, political, and economic heartland of the country, and each prefecture offers something a little different from its neighbors.

    • Gunma Prefecture is easily accessible from Tokyo, and in addition to the area's popular natural attractions like Oze Marshland and Fukiware Falls, Gunma also has a number of popular hot springs (Kusatsu, Ikaho, Minakami, Shima)―it's even called an Onsen Kingdom. The prefecture is popular with history buffs and train lovers, thanks to spots like world heritage site Tomioka Silk Mill, the historic Megane-bashi Bridge, and the Watarase Keikoku Sightseeing Railway.

    • TOCHIGI

Tochigi Prefecture's capital is Utsunomiya, known for famous gyoza, and just an hour from Tokyo. The prefecture is full of nature-related sightseeing opportunities year-round, from the blooming of spring flowers to color fall foliage. Tochigi also has plenty of extremely well-known sightseeing destinations, like World Heritage Site Nikko Toshogu Shrine, Lake Chuzenji, and Ashikaga Flower Park―famous for expansive wisteria trellises. In recent years the mountain resort town of Nasu has also become a popular excursion, thanks in part to the local imperial villa. Tochigi is a beautiful place to enjoy the world around you.

    • Tokyo (東京) is Japan's busy capital, and the most populous metropolitan area in the world. While the city as a whole is quite modern, crowded with skyscrapers and bustling crowds, Tokyo also holds onto its traditional side in places like the Imperial Palace and Asakusa neighborhood. It's one of the world's top cities when it comes to culture, the arts, fashion, games, high-tech industries, transportation, and more.

    • The Chubu Region (中部地方) is located right in the center of Japan's main island, and consists of 9 prefectures: Aichi, Fukui, Gifu, Ishikawa, Nagano, Niigata, Shizuoka, Toyama, and Yamanashi. It's primarily famous for its mountains, as the region contains both Mt. Fuji and the Japanese Alps. The ski resorts in Niigata and Nagano also draw visitors from around the world, making it a popular winter destination.

    • Nagano Prefecture's popularity starts with a wealth of historic treasures, like Matsumoto Castle, Zenkoji Temple, and Togakushi Shrine, but the highlight might just be the prefecture's natural vistas surrounded by the "Japanese Alps." Nagano's fruit is famous, and there are plenty of places to pick it fresh, and the area is full of hot springs, including Jigokudani Monkey Park―where monkeys take baths as well! Thanks to the construction of the Hokuriku shinkansen line, Nagano is easily reachable from the Tokyo area, adding it to plenty of travel itineraries. And after the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics, ski resorts like Hakuba and Shiga Kogen are known around the world.

    • Aichi Prefecture sits in the center of the Japanese islands, and its capital city, Nagoya, is a center of politics, commerce, and culture.
