Watch the hills burst into (controlled) fire during this very cool festival held in mid-August. The event is meant to honor the spirits of fallen soldiers and pray for peace, with a religious ceremony that includes both Buddhist and Shinto rituals. The big finale is the 108 fires started on the side of Mt. Takamado, visible from the city, that are arranged in the shape of kanji character “大”.
