Found in Hachioji, a slightly suburban part of the Tokyo area, the gorgeous ginkgo trees that line the Koshu Kaido road (one of the five routes of the Edo period) have been there since the Showa era. Spend an afternoon pretending to be a historical traveler, and use an old-fashioned wooden “trans pass” (stamped using wood burning!) to tour 12 nearby checkpoints. It’s a fun chance to learn a little about Japan’s history, see some retro bits of Japanese culture, and celebrate with the locals, all under a canopy of autumn’s golden ginkgo leaves.
