Fireworks festivals are a must-see highlight during summer trips to Japan, and the Adachi Fireworks Festival (足立の花火) is now the first major fireworks show of the Tokyo season, with plans to hold the event earlier than usual starting in 2025! The Adachi Fireworks Festival has traditionally been held in late July, during peak summer festival season, but due to increasingly erratic summer weather in recent years, this iconic Tokyo summer event will be moved up to Saturday, May 31st for its 47th edition in 2025 – marking its new role as Tokyo’s first big summer fireworks event of the year.
The highlight of the festival is the breathtaking launch of over 14,000 fireworks in just one hour, in what they call a “high-density fireworks display”! This year’s show is extra special, celebrating 400 years since the area was established as Senjujuku (a resting point along a major traveler’s route in historic Japan) with a bonus of 1,010 additional fireworks – bringing the total to 14,010 colorful pyrotechnic spectacles in one spectacular visual celebration.
