Summer Festival Traditions in the Tokyo Area
Visit this popular shrine just outside Tokyo to immerse yourself in Japan’s summer traditions, surrounded by the relaxing sound of wind chimes tinkling in the warm breeze! Kawagoe’s Hikawa Shrine is close to 1,500 years old, and thanks to the enshrined god of match-making, it’s always been popular among couples and those searching for love, getting especially crowded around Tanabata season (when festivals celebrate the love of a legendary couple) in July and August. But in recent years, the shrine has begun a new summer tradition by setting up tunnels of little glass wind chimes, and crowds flock from near and far to hear the quiet crescendos in the hot summer air.

Limited-Edition Omamori & Goshuin
Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine offers a unique festival atmosphere and classic Shinto shrine traditions, as well as a selection of special festival “omamori” amulets, and seasonal goshuin shrine seals popular among avid collectors.
Soak up the Summer in Kawagoe

Head over to admire the lovely music of the wind chimes, lined up in rows to create a corridor of sound, and take some cute pictures in front of the colorful backdrop they create. Glowing lights add a little extra magic after dark, too!
