What Is the Samurai Restaurant?
Three times a day, the Samurai Restaurant takes a small audience on a journey to explore a unique world all their own, in the form of a samurai entertainment show.

Located in the busy Kabukicho neighborhood of Shinjuku, the Samurai Restaurant offers a whole entertainment experience, fusing the essence of traditional Japanese culture with modern ideas to create a show like nothing else. The cast of exceptional dancers and musicians, with their talented stage crew, work together to create a new world within each scene, supported by exquisitely crafted costumes and props.

A Peek Behind the Scenes at the Samurai Restaurant

During this visit to the restaurant, the Japankuru team had the chance to ask a few of the dancers what the show was all about.
”We’re in such a flashy space, with such a flamboyant show, and there’s so much going on that it’s hard to know where to focus. But we want everyone to have a great time together!” They explained that to fully experience the Samurai Restaurant, you should let yourself smile, laugh, and cheer along with the show.
Put simply, “don’t overthink it, just enjoy yourself!”

Still not sure you can squeeze the Samurai Restaurant into your busy Tokyo travel schedule? Well, we also talked to a few other audience members at the show, so maybe they can convince you. According to this show’s enthusiastic onlookers, “It was wild!” Even “breathtaking!” One excited visitor told us, “My friend brought me, but this was amazing, I will absolutely be coming back

Samurai Restaurant Highlights
Characters & Costumes

Carrying on the legacy of the now-defunct Shinjuku Robot Restaurant, long-time fans of Tokyo’s entertainment scene may recognize threads of inspiration that run unbroken through the years, but the Samurai Restaurant is also a totally new entertainment experience. Every audience is treated to new surprises, as the performance is constantly tweaked and polished, to deliver something that’s more than just a show.

Each time the audience’s attention seems to be caught by some fresh aspect of this over-the-top visual feast—the dazzling diva engaged in an enormous lion dance, or the dragon head chariotting musicians across the stage.

For the show’s 2026 updates, it felt like the music played a more essential role than ever before. With taiko drummers passionately beating away at their instruments, phoenixes floating across the stage, and a million other things all happening at once, it can be hard to tell where you should be looking.

New Food & Events

Every visit to the Samurai Restaurant seems to bring new surprises to treat all five senses. Toasts of sweet sake, tasty snacks, sometimes even a free bucket of popcorn! During this visit, we caught a special event highlighting the Samurai Restaurant’s BBQ, the newest addition to the menu.

The BBQ is handled by chef Atsushi Kimura, who learned his craft training with BBQ experts in the US, and now calls himself a “BBQ entertainer.” On the day the Japankuru team visited the Samurai Restaurant, Chef Kimura also decided to stop by and treat the audience to a “BBQ show” where he got on stage to slice up samples for every single guest. Kimura smokes his BBQ using wild Japanese cherry wood, serving up tender meat that melts off the bone, with tangy sauces and house-made pickles.
The chef himself won’t be there to put on a show every day, but if you order the “Samurai BBQ” you too can try a dish of his bone-in pork ribs and house-made sausage—a deeply flavorful fusion of American techniques and smoky Japanese cherry wood.

Warm Welcomes

The Samurai Restaurant is always staffed by friendly faces, guiding guests to their seats and handing out happi coats with plenty of smiles and clear communication. Even once the show starts, announcements are made in English, so international visitors know what’s going on. Guests are nothing if not well taken care of.
