Each spring, the historic Nezu Shrine in Tokyo’s Bunkyo Ward bursts into color during the Bunkyo Azalea Festival 2025 (Tsutsuji Matsuri/文京つつじまつり), an unforgettable floral event that transforms the shrine’s grounds into a vivid landscape of pink, purple, red, and white blossoms. Held from early to late April, this seasonal celebration is a must-see for flower lovers in Tokyo!

Bunkyo Azalea Festival at Nezu Shrine

For a small entrance fee, visitors can step into Nezu Shrine’s breathtaking azalea garden, home to over 3,000 azalea bushes and around 100 unique varieties. The garden path winds through a concentrated hillside of tightly packed blooms, and the unique atmosphere makes each visit feel like walking through a scene from a storybook – the entrance to fairyland, perhaps. The contrast between the brilliant flowers and the shrine’s traditional architecture only adds to the visual magic.

In addition to admiring the blossoms, guests during the festival period can enjoy a smattering of traditional performances and Shinto rituals, and enjoy the garden’s many varieties with fresh eyes at the small azalea market. Located just a short walk from Nezu Station, the Bunkyo Azalea Festival offers a unique opportunity to experience both Japanese cultural heritage and natural beauty in one tranquil urban oasis.
