A Tokyo Aquarium Event: Meet Sumida’s Fur Seals!
Fur seals are uniquely adorable creatures, but so often they’re mistaken for sea lions or true seals, so this spring, Sumida Aquarium is doing all it can to make every visitor a fur seal fan! This fun event comes a year after a special exhibition explaining what makes fur seals unique, and now the aquarium is showing their appreciation for all the animal lovers who have shown love to these fluffy pinnipeds ever since. Themed after Japan’s distinctive fandom culture, this aquarium event is a one-of-a-kind way to celebrate Japanese culture and cute animals, all at once.
Highlights for All the Fur Seal Fans
From special displays to hands-on workshops, there’s a lot to see during this fur seal-focused event. First, head to the exhibition area on the 6th floor for a series of fur seal panels, including one featuring some of the aquarium’s favorite fur seal fan posts on social media, and another analyzing a “Fur Seal Awareness Survey”—how well does the Japanese public really know fur seals!? You’ll also see a display on the 5th floor designed to delight the fur seal fandom with personal details on the aquarium’s own fur seal residents.
Next to the fur seal pool, you can test your own fur seal knowledge with the second edition of the Animal Identification Challenge!
Visitors of all ages can dive deep into the fur seal fun with an aquarium workshop during their visit! Anyone can join the free Flapping Fur Seal Mask daily workshop to put together a cute cardboard mask, while elementary students can join a special quiz (paid) designed to help them learn more about fur seals!
Fur Seal Themed Cafe Options & Cute Merchandise
The Penguin Cafe is selling four limited-time items to help people celebrate this fur seal festival. The Fur Seal Sakura Latte includes sweet sakura syrup and an adorable fur seal marshmallow, while a number of other drinks come with cute fur seal drink sleeves. To eat, try the “Let’s Eat Together! Saury Dog,” inspired by Ana, the sea lion who eats her saury head and all, or get the Sumida Mini Fur Seal Cakes for a sweet treat!
Fur seal fans have a lot to look forward to at this unique Sumida Aquarium event, but before you leave, stop into the gift shop to pick up some fur seal stuffed toys and savory konbu tea bags—they make it look like little fur seals are swimming around your cup!

Located in the most southwestern part of Japan, Kyushu (九州) is an island of 7 prefectures: Fukuoka, Saga, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Oita, Miyazaki, and Kagoshima. The island's unique culture has been influenced by Chinese and Dutch trade, along with missionaries coming in through Nagasaki's port. Modern-day travelers love the lush natural scenery and fresh food, plus the natural hot springs found all throughout the area (thanks to volcanic activity)!

FUKUOKA

Fukuoka Prefecture has the highest population on the southern island of Kyushu, with two major cities: Fukuoka and Kitakyushu. Thanks to growing transportation networks, Fukuoka is more accessible than ever, and so are the many local attractions. On top of historical spots like Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, travelers shouldn't miss Fukuoka's food scene, with motsu nabe (offal hotpot), mentaiko (spicy cod roe), and famous Hakata ramen―best eaten from a food stall in the Nakasu area of Hakata. Plus, it's full of all sorts of destinations for travelers, like trendy shopping centers, and the beautiful nature of Itoshima and Yanagawa.

KAGOSHIMA

Kagoshima Prefecture played a major role in Japan's modernization as a backdrop for famous historical figures like samurais Saigo Takamori and Okubo Toshimichi, who pushed Japan out of the Edo era and into the Meiji. Because of that, Sengan-en Garden is just one of many historical destinations, and when it comes to attractions Kagoshima has plenty: the active volcano of Sakurajima, popular hot springs Ibusuki Onsen and Kirishima Onsen, World Heritage Site Yakushima Island, even what Japan calls the "island closest to heaven," Amami Oshima. Kagoshima might be found on the very southernmost tip of the southern island of Kyushu, but there's plenty to see.

OKINAWA

The island chain of Okinawa (沖縄) makes up the southernmost tip of Japan, which is why it's also the most tropical area in the country. Thanks to a history of independence and totally distinct political and cultural events, Okinawa has a unique culture, and remnants of the Ryukyu Kingdom are still visible all over the islands. Food, language, traditional dress, it's all a little different! It's also said to be the birthplace of karate.
