神田祭
The Kanda Shrine isn’t the most popular Japanese shrine among sightseers, but it is a major destination for Shinto believers in Tokyo, drawing huge crowds over New Year’s and for summer festivals. The shrine’s own unique festival, referred to as the Kanda Festival or Kanda Matsuri (神田祭), happens in mid-May and has been going on long enough that it was already a big deal back when Tokyo was known as Edo. Today, it’s recognized as one of the “3 Great Festivals of Edo,” making it a major Tokyo event, but it’s also one of the “3 Great Festivals of Japan”! Big Japanese festivals often include processions where groups of participants carry a smallish portable shrine called a “mikoshi” (神輿) on their shoulders – at the Kanda Festival, some of these mikoshi are so large that they’re the size of a car!
